t43 hibernation problem: hardware???

#1 Post by bblesser » Fri Jan 08, 2010 6:24 pm

I just purchased on off-lease T43 (2668-6GU) which works great (like new) and I then loaded on the most recent Lenovo and MS drivers and software. It was then that I discovered that Hibernation fails. It goes into hibernation correctly, and when coming out it does the normal progress bar Resuming... At the end of 100% it just hangs and sits there. If I wait many minutes it reboots and gives me the choice of a clean start. As a computer engineer, the obvious problem would be one of the drive updates.

Rather than testing them one at a time, using another HDD, I simple reinstalled the original IBM boot print using Rescue and Recovery. In this environment, the OS software and drivers were (in theory) the same as when the machine shipped. Hibernation still fails in the same way.

Assuming that the T43 worked fine when it was first shipped, and assuming that I successfully restored the HD to the original factory condition, the only explanation is some minor hardware failure. My best guess is the the hibernation hangs waiting for some hardware handshake (interrupt) that tells it to continue. The mouse still works.

Does anyone have any idea what hardware problem would only manifest itself in hibernation? Or alternative, can anyone suggest an experiment to determine the nature of the hang?

Try booting from a "live" Linux CD and see what happens there.

I can attest to the fact that Mint enables hibernation on a T43, so you may want to give it a shot.

Good luck.
