I visited the Greenock plant in the 1970s when it was a hive of activity. Thank you for posting that nostalgic link.

I would love to just go and see everything there as it is now...

Do you think someone will "just take" that ThinkPad one day (and maybe all the processors etc!), but it doesn't seem to have an AC adapter though! :(

Looks more or less like the 340CSE I used to own. (Not exactly, the 340 has 2 sliders (?) on the right instead of 1, to adjust brightness and contrast.

But yes, that seems to be a Thinkpad from the mid 90's.

That's really neat. Imagine how much the processors and stuff would have been worth new, and they just left them lying around.

This almost a little sad to see. So many employees and so much activity, and now.. closed down and left to rot. Anyone know what the plans are?

Even though most of it is outdated equipment, it must be some assets inside these buildings still. It didn't seem to be have been too much vandalism yet, which is often the sad case with places like this when they are abandoned for a longer period of time.

Needless to say that I would have loved to be able to go there and grabbed some old laptops. :)

Edit: I noticed some links about Greenock demolition, so I guess the entire site is being knocked down.

To Quote http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_railway_station
Parts of the compound were sold off to companies such as Sanmina-SCI which has now closed, as has Lenovo. The site is now a ghost of its former glory; by June 2009 half of the buildings had been demolished, although locals still refer to the complex by its old name. Accordingly, there are no plans to change the station name. Only employees that work within the compound are able to use this station
This is one of the saddest things i have ever seen, it just seems like such a waste

Yes, this particular thing struck me as sad too. We (In Europe) have seen too many cases where great industry has been bought up and moved to Asia or Eastern Europe where the labor costs are lower. A sign of businesses moving forward, but sad and hard to accept for those who end up unemployed and have to watch the place where they worked being demolished.

Seems like the last employees working at the Greenock plant were not too satisfied with IBM/Sanmina, which is fair enough: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cycleologi ... 597220928/
