First Post! Couple of ?'s

#1 Post by mr2nr » Tue Jan 12, 2010 11:56 am

Hi I have just purchased my fifth T42 and thought I should join this forum :).

I love these laptops as I don't have many issues and for 4-6 years old and holding up like they do you really can't go wrong (like you can buying a netbook  ). My latest T42 was a 15" model and it didn't state it in the auction and I had a HDD from a friend who had a 14" T42. Well thinking I could just slap it in it would work I was disappointed when it never would see the HDD. But upon further investigation the 15" has a deeper HD pocket so my caddy was preventing it from seating the pins :). I would think these would have adjustment holes but couldn't find any so I just removed the cover and it slid in and worked just like it should. But I plan on getting the correct caddy.

So this leads to the first question is... Can you use a 14" HDD caddy in a 15" T42?

I still have to find the correct Wireless card driver for the T42 2379 DXU. I have been through them all and to no avail. I didn't uninstall every time though so that might be causing the issue. Anyways I have the IBM recovery disk which i will try or I also have a copy of Windows 7.

So my second question is... Will the IBM recovery disks resolve more driver issues than Windows 7 or what wireless XP driver should I be focusing on for a 2379 DXU?

Thanks for any help guys. I have already used a lot of info searching.

Welcome to the forum!

Hard drive caddies are the same between 14" and 15" T4x machines, but the covers are not. I'd strongly suggest getting one, they're less than $10 on fleabay.

Your wireless driver:

http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc ... wc05ww.zip

After downloading it you must go into C>Drivers>Win>Wlanint and run the setup file from there.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the driver. It didn't install saying it was a later version of the one that was installed!!??? So apparently I had installed the new version which didn't work. So I manually loaded the driver on the file you gave me and it works. Talk about a pain :(. Thanks again!

I am still interested in how many T42 users are using Windows 7 with 512 of Ram and if it is even advisable?

I wouldn't run W7 without 1.5 GB at the very least.

Any operating system that needs more than 1GB I don't need :). I really wish Google would put something out. With 4 different smart phone Operating systems do you think we could have more than three for PC's!!!!
