Any way to customize Restore And Recovery process?

#1 Post by tbessie » Wed Jun 09, 2004 4:18 pm

(Posted originally in Thinkpad X forum)...

I've decided, after getting my X40, that I want to restore something *like* the original XP environment that came with the machine, but I want to install XP on the 2nd partition ( D: ), since I reserve the 1st drive ( C: ) for boot managers and as a temporary space for emergencies, and also not install the recovery partition.

That is, I want to install WinXP on D:, with all the software IBM originally included, but without the service partition.

The problem is, the recovery CDs, of course, just want to install to C: and install the recovery partition. Has anyone ever got IBM to tell them if there's any way to change which drive they install XP to, and for it NOT to install the recovery partition?

Its a small 774,973 bytes pdf file.

Thanks for the link! I read the whole document, and it doesn't appear (from what I can see) that there is any easy way to customize where things are put. You can easily customize what files are included in the predesktop environment, what the menus and links look like, add/remove some functionality, etc. but you can't say "install windows on D: (partition table entry 2) instead of C:", which is what I wanted.

I suppose with enough familiarity with all the setup files this could be done, but it doesn't look obvious from the document.

Thanks very much for your help, though; that looks like the only thing out there on the subject.

In the end, last night I just did a system restore with the restore/recovery CDs and will live with WinXP being on C:.
