Windows freezes after wakeup from standby

#1 Post by bridgesmj » Fri Jan 15, 2010 3:48 pm

Hi I'm new to this forum and will appreciate any help that you guys can offer.

I recently purchased a Class A refurbished IBM Thinkpad T60 running Windows XP SP3. I've had two thinkpads before, but this is the first one I've had that uses Lenovo's ThinkVantage software to manage user login-logoff etc.

Basically, when I wake the machine from standby mode, nine times out of ten it will 'freeze' (i.e. not re-enter the Windows environment), just showing my background image. The only way I seem to get out of this is to force power off by holding the power button which means I am unable to save my work, end my programs, and shut down the machine properly. Obviously I don't want to keep doing this as I don't want to run the risk of corrupting my disk etc.

I've run Lenovo's system update utility to update the latest drivers, and also done the latest Windows updates. I heard something about a Windows bug called the 'black screen of death' (not blue) and am wondering if this is anything to do with this.

If anyone has experience with this I'd appreciate any help you can give, and hopefully a solution.

Thanks in advance,

Mark.

Things I would look for...
I would check that the BIOS and Embedded Controller updates are at the latest version. Also check the versions of the ACPI Power Management driver and the Display driver that they are current.

Hi, thanks for your advice.

I have tried all of these, but to no avail. I'm sure it's something to do with IBM's proprietary Client Security Solution that is used to manage logon/logoff etc.

Is there a way of disabling this and going back to the trusty Windows login/logoff system. I don't need all of that extra security (unless my mum is gonna hack in the look at my internet history!)

Cheers,

Mark.

Uninstall the Client Security application in Windows and disable the security chip in BIOS.

Thanks, that seems to have done the trick. Although having uninstalled Client Security Solution, some other piece of ThinkVantage software seems to have taken control of the login/logoff process. This is good as it still means I can use the fingerprint reader, but the standby/wakeup function seems to work now too.

Thanks for your help! I probably should have thought of all this myself...
