Upgrading TP 600 cpu to 400 mhz mmc-1

#1 Post by beemer » Sat Jan 16, 2010 9:57 pm

[mod edit: split from Official 600 Upgrade thread to focus discussion on problem]
Hi,
I am wondering if anyone here has run into problems upgrading a plain TP 600 cpu to the 400 mhz mmc-1.
I bought one off of Ebay and keep getting the "blue screen of death" that points to the cpu. When I reinstall the old cpu everything is OK.
I've updated to the latest BIOS, changed the RAM, reinstalled Windows and it is still the same.
I was wondering if you have to change something in the hex editor or something else I'm missing.
The only difference I see is the 400mhz has a L2 of 256k and the 300mhz has 512k.
Any help would be great.

Is that 400Mhz module a Celeron? It's been a long time since, I've tried upgrading a TP600-- but I know not all Celeron models all compatible. Perhaps if you post some additional information regarding your CPU type, someone here may be able to offer advice.

Thanks for the response.
The part number is PMF40002001AA.
I believe it is a Pentium.

Yes,
This page gives the info.

Everything I've read leads to this just being a drop in, but it has not worked out that way and was hoping someone could give me a idea what I'm doing wrong.

Is the heatsink making good contact? The only thing a higher value CPU of the same type will do is create more heat and use some current. You could try a different power brick to see if the one you have is marginal, or make sure you have a good battery installed to help.

Also, how about disabling the on-board memory? Long shot, but worth a try.

I've done it 100's of times, I'd say you have a hardware problem.

1. The heat sink is properly installed and the battery is working well. It works over 1.5 hrs with the other CPU.

2. How would I go about disabling the on-board memory?

You mean the 400mhz CPU right? Or something else on the motherboard?

Thanks

The 4000MHz upgrade. The MMC 1 400MHz CPU we would pull from Toshiba Tecra 8000's put whatever CPU was in the thinkpad back in the toshibas then sell the toshiba's on ebay.

SOLVED: Returned CPU and got another one. Worked fine with no changes. Turned out to be a straight swap.
Thanks for everyone's input.

I figured that was your issue. Glad you got it figured out.
