T30 HD 40Gb ATA death and upgrading

#1 Post by kluge » Wed Jan 20, 2010 12:06 pm

Hello everybody,

I have a T30 2367 up and running since 2005 but I feel for the HD (Hitachi HGST HTS5480xxM9AT00 - 40Gb ATA/IDE) is time to pass by. I have googled onthe net finding some contraddictorial articles related to a couple of things that worried me before buying and install a brand new HD. It seems some HD brands are not recognized by the BIOS or they are not fully partitione as the Bios seems to recognize no more than 60 Gb. On the contrary some other do affirm they succesfully upgrade to more than 60 GB. I am confused.
Hence I pose few questions to this dedicated forum:-

1) Does the T30 BIOS recognize HDs upper to 60Gb size and is there any list of HD compatible on the machine?
2) PATA HD is compatibile with old ATA?
3) Is there any succesful user who upgrades to more than 60 Gb an can describe the hardware and procedure?

Thanks a lot

Robert

Welcome to the Forum.

1) The T30 can handle any PATA/ATA/IDE hard disk of up to 320GB. There is no list 'built in'.
2) PATA/ATA/ATA-6/IDE are all the same. Just do NOT get a SATA drive.
3) There are no rules for a large(r) hard disk installation. It's the same for every size.

I've been thorugh a number of hard drive upgrades for my T30, most recently a WD Scorpio 250GB last weekend, to enable me to do an upgrade install of Windows 7 over my XP system.

I just backed up my system partition with Acronis True Image, swapped the drives over and then did a stand-alone restore on the new drive. I never need to do a specific backup of my D: (data only) partition as I can restore that from my external backup drive once the system is back.

Ok I bought a Samsung 160Gb HD, plugged in and everything on the BIOS and XP went ok.

Thanks for the hints.

I have a t30 2366-mu9 and I upgraded to a 160hd. My system will on read 128gigs of the harddrive. I did the bios update to 2.10 and the embedded upgrade to 1.07. How can I get my t30 to read a larger harddrive? What models unable the larger harddrives?

Check if you have a jumper on the back of the hard disk, which limits it to ca. 130GB.
It could also be an old version of your FORMAT program, that caused this.
You could make a second partition with the leftover 30-40GB and use that for e.g. data storage.
