Can r50p become a frankenpad?

Hello,

I have an r50p with beautiful 1600x1200 ips display.
I need two things:

- more brightness on display (I suppose ccfl is at the end of life);
- more speed.

Can I put inside it a new ccfl and a different motherboard? (dualcore, I prefer ddr and not ddr2 so I can recycle my 2gb).

You can replace the CCFL (a PITA job) or an entire LCD to get more brightness.

While your R50p won't take a newer motherboard, you can replace the CPU with a Dothan one...

PM 745 - 1.8 GHZ

PM 755 - 2.0

PM 765 - 2.1

Do bear in mind that all of these have 2MB cache as opposed to 1MB on your current Banias CPU, and you would notice the difference. I know I have.

For sure, you can swap out the mobo with a T43p mobo. That would bring you up to a faster GPU, ATI Fire GL V3200, it would boost the bus from 400MHz to 533MHz, you would run faster memory, up to 2GB of PC2-4200 (or PC2-5300), and a faster bus CPU, up to a Pentium M 2.26GHz, which is fast. (You would loose the FireWire port.)

The display would work and you can swp out the CCFL or pay someone else to do it.

You could also find a PATA laptop SSD hard drive for even more speed.

Of course, the most cost effective thing to do would be just sell your R50p and buy a 15" T43p. But note, used T60's don't cost much more than T43's.

A new lcd screen costs too much I hoped to change only ccfl lamp, but if it is so difficult I have to stop hoping.

I think also changing the motherboard for a t43p one has a bad price/perfomance ratio.

I suppose I will probably change the cpu as you suggest.

The only problem now is that the screen is not bright....
