wanna buy thinkpad help??
Hi to all thinkpad users
I'd like to buy a new Thinkpad T42 but i wasn't able to find one which satisfies my needs(14.1SXGA+ , 60GB HDD, 512RAM, Bluetooth, FingerprintReader, 64MB ATI RADEON 9600 , Pentium M 1.7GHz or 1.8GHz).
Do you know any model consists of these specifications?
Thanks in advance...

no, you cannot... but search for visa/mc discounts.. they are often similar..... also, check with Bill (host of this forum, www.thinkpads.com)l.. he may have similar models at a good price

>Well, actually, most likely you can. Follow the link through and pick your state and you'll see "student and alumni" purchases link. So if you are an alumnus/ae of a higher education institution, I believe you can use this link.

OK, I followed it through for my state and never saw a list of the applicable colleges or universities. At what point does the list appear?

It might be alot cheaper to buy a 2378FVU and upgrade the warranty and the hardware you want. You can order the unit with Bluetooth or install it later yourself. Follow the link in my signature.

I really dont think they check if you are really a student/alumni...some ppl might disagree w/mescusyxx wrote:Is it possible to use this discount? but I am not an education emloyee or student.
I recently purchased a 2378FVU with the student/alumni discount. I called and the guy never asked any info regarding my school.
I've had the laptop for about a month now and still no verification.

I purchased a T42 2373m3u last week. It shipped 3 days after ordering. Much faster than the phone salesperson and email order confirmation indicated. Very pleased with my first ThinkPad. Just starting to set it up. It's light and very quiet.
I purchased with the alumni discount. Months ago I asked an edu. salesperson if that's ok and she answered, yes. With my recent order I again asked the phone salesperson if it's ok to buy as an alumni, of Cal Poly SLO, and he said yes. The discounts from
http://www.ibm.com/education/us seem to match the credit card discounts from the various businesscenter sites.
If I was currently a student my discount thru a college computer shop or bookstore may have been much hundreds of dollars more per quotes I've read here.
There was conflicting information from IBM about the hard drive speed. The IBM website on some pages described it as 5400 rpm and on others 7200 rpm. The email order confirmation showed 60 MB 5400 rpm. I called back the IBM phone salesperson who assured me it's 7200 rpm as described in the TAbook. Is there a way to check and confirm this on my new M3U?
My opinion is the M3U is a very good buy only if it comes with a 7200 rpm HD. They cost about $150 to buy as an after market upgrade. If the M3U was to come with a 60 MB 5400 rpm HD it'd be overpriced in comparison to an upgraded FVU.

IBM T42 2373M3U - that's broken and needs to be replaced
As I stated above, IBM allows legitimate Alumni discounts, and they are almost identical to MC/VISA discounts....Esteban wrote:I purchased with the alumni discount. In Device Manager my hard drive is shown to be HTS726060M9ATOO. Does that enable anyone to to tell me it's speed?

Leon, I think that, as well spoken as most participants here are, many people may be college alumni who would benefit from the greater model availablitiy of the edu. site and it's discounts, but don't know either are available to them. Wholly on the up and up.

Absolutely agreed! I am just clarifying for those few who have suggested directly or indirectly that IBM doesn't verify (in the case that they weren't eligible). As one who has overseen the purchase of many hundreds of Thinkpads in the past, I know for a fact that they DO spot verifications, and want to give them a "heads up" of the risks. The choice, as always, is theirs.
On another note, the overt discussion of gaining any illegitimate discount (not referring to this thread) unfairly puts our gracious host at risk, and is NOT tolerated on this board.

Re: HTS726060M9AT00
The answer is in the question grasshopper ... HTS is the manufacturer, in this case Hitachi, the 72 indicates 7200RPM, the 60 refers to the size of the drive.Esteban wrote:In Device Manager my hard drive is shown to be HTS726060M9ATOO. Does that enable anyone to to tell me it's speed?

I am an eligible alumnus of a qualifying university, also a qualifying state employee. Looking at this website, I don't see any "screaming deals", nothing that looks any better than the MC/VISA cost of the 2378FVU. Is there a "deal" on a T42 model there that I am missing??

Thank you kind MobileGuru. I feel better with confirmation my M3U does have a 7200 rpm HD. I'm in the process of setting up, and checking out, my new ThinkPad. Following some of the info. in the "Sticky: FAQ: Read Before You Buy! (2378FVU recommended) and after"

No reason to lie about the student discount.. the Visa/MC discounts seem to be every bit as good?? How does the stockholder discount compare however?

Andrew, I read about the 2373M3U in a thread in the X series forum. It seemed to have everthing I reasonably wanted. Sort of a like a souped up FVU.I am an eligible alumnus of a qualifying university, also a qualifying state employee. Looking at this website, I don't see any "screaming deals", nothing that looks any better than the MC/VISA cost of the 2378FVU. Is there a "deal" on a T42 model there that I am missing??

When I tried to find it on the Visa/MC sites, and another for my trade assn., it wasn't offered on any of them. The advantage of the edu. site IMHO is that it seems to have many more models available, not the best prices.
I was first drawn to buying an FVU for $1,484. After adding on the likely cost of upgrades (RAM, 3 yr warrantee, 60 MB 7200 rpm HD, perhaps bluetooth) I concluded the 2373M3U, $1,895, had all I wanted, indeed more, at a fair price in comparison to buying, and upgrading, a FVU.
The M3U is a stock IBM model covered by a 3 yr IBM warantee. Already upgraded saving me time, trouble, & perhaps from unforseen complications. Upgrades to a FVU wouldn't be covered by IBM warantees-an added value in favor of the M3U.
I might have contacted past clients who retired from IBM and saved many hundred$ with EPP prices. With Do Not Call rules it might be illegal, expen$ive, to call them. So I didn't. And paid IBM more.
So, seek out the best discount you're elligible for. Perhaps, in your case, it may be state discounts.

Better, than using one of the above vendors, to buy from Bill, the host of this forum http://www.thinkpads.com

If the edu site http://www.ibm.com/education/us offers a model that the credit card discount site doesn't (and you're not a student or alumni) ask them, on the phone, if they'll sell the model you want and match the edu. web price. No guarantee it'll work. It'd seem worth the effort.
The best buys, by far, are for IBM employees, and their friends.
EDIT: As I edit this formating has become difficult and extraneous urls symbols show. Oh, well.
You'll probably pay hundreds of dollar$ too much if you buy thru any of the above vendors. Nor will they match IBM's 30 day return guarantee and 30 day price protection. Also IBM often offers promotions, like free shipping, and recently, a free second battery -- kind of a hidden discount / added valueThank you very much.
I have another question, I checked IBM's official website but they do not sell this model however some pc malls do. May I trust these web sites such as (CDW, PCNation, CostCentral etc..)?
