ThinkPad 560X / ThinkPad 240 PCMCIA CD-ROM Drive

#1 Post by ThinkPad560X » Sat Jan 23, 2010 3:59 am

I bought a rare IBM ThinkPad PCMCIA CD-ROM Drive orginally for the IBM ThinkPad 560 series. Model 1969-008.
http://195.224.149.148/SB/IBM_Rom_1969.jpg

From the sale picture, it doesn't look like it has the PCMCIA card attached to the wire. It has the wire and battery.
I have a few IBM PCMCIA cards laying around that came with my old ThinkPads when I bought them. Would this card work on the PCMCIA CD Drive?

Correct me if i'm wrong but do you want to connect the cd-rom into that card you showed in the second picture ?
If so, this will not work - the PCMCIA card is a network card (just do a google search on the Token ring standard). You got two options:

either search for a correct PCMCIA card designed for the CD-ROM

or buy a new PCMCIA CD-ROM with an adapter included

My understanding is that the card you're looking at won't work.

man I threw out a box of them. I'd have given you the card if I still had them. I do have the boot disks for the 4x, the 20x and the external drive's, multibay, 8GB 8E HDD and the ultrabay 2k. If it's not againts forum rules let me know if you need any of them. They are not the IBM disks they are ones I made to get me to a C: promt, not start a recovery.

What makes me upset was the seller didn't send the cable with it, as he stated in the picture and sale. comes with CD-ROM Drive and cable shown in picture, No Card or AC Adapter. So I have to find the Cable with the card. I found alot of those UltraBay 2000 cards with there cable. I sent the seller an email telling him I didn't get the cable but no responce yet. That was on ebay if woundering.

Does anyone know where I can find the PCMCIA card for my CD-ROM Drive? The seller sent me the cable and got it yesterday and all I need now is the card that hooks it up. The battery on it even holds a 100% charge for as old as it is.

I think this information might help you find the right card. The P/N of the 4X card is 46H5904; the "FRU P/N" is 75H7523.

I just got the same thing and I've spent the last 3 hours fiddling around trying to TinyXP to boot off of it with no success. Drive 1969-011 and PC Card 00K1084. I've got the PC Card driver 1.01 (2002/03/18) from http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... KK4XU.html ... extracted it in DOS mode, it FORCES you to extract it to a 1.44MB floppy! Wrote the lines in CONFIG.SYS on a W98SE boot disk. The driver installation succeeds, but ultimately fails to be assigned a drive letter.

Closest I got was using PLOP boot manager ( http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager.html ) off the USB. It sees my USB Optiarc DVDRW drive and tries to boot but it just sticks at the blinking cursor. This BM specifically says no PCMCIA support.

Gonna do it the "normal" way - extract the HD and put an nLite'd i386 directory on it to install.

My intention ultimately was to try to run it on a CF card as all I'm using the 240 is a data monitoring laptop.

Just been going on ebay a few times a month and can't find the card that goes to the IDE PCMCIA CD Drive Type/Model 1969-008

The closest card I find witch is the same style but has a diffrent port end on the card is

Ok so you modified the CONFIG.SYS file, but did you add MSCDEX.EXE to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file? If not then you need to do so.

For example if your CONFIG.SYS file has a line that looks something like this:

DEVICE=A:\OEMCDROM.SYS /D:OEMCD001

Then you will need to add this line to you AUTOEXEC.BAT FILE

A:\MSCDEX.EXE /D:OEMCD001

It goes without saying that you will also need the MSCDEX.EXE file on your boot disk as well. Basically you load the driver in CONFIG.SYS and the MSCDEX.EXE assigns it a drive letter and name. Without loading MSCDEX.EXE, you will not have a drive letter for the CD-ROM drive and thus you will not be able to access it from DOS.

AAGH. Why is this so complicated!!? I've done all that and still it doesn't work. Either I've got a faulty PCMCIA slot or the PCMCIA card is faulty? The drive spins up when I power on.

I've rescinded to the fact that there is no way I can install TinyXP on here. I wanted to put an absolute minimum install of XP on the 240. Perhaps I'll see what I can do with nLite.
