Memory modules for A21m-2628G2U

#1 Post by srkumar1946 » Sat Jan 23, 2010 11:00 pm

Hi friends,
My Thinkpad A21m 2628-G2U has got 128mb ram.I want to add 256mb ram module.what specifications to look for in the 256mb ram?other than PC100 sodimm 144 Pin, anything else to be specifically looked into? I am planning to search for one 256mb ram in Ebay. The CPU in my laptop is below 1Ghz speed.even though PC100 sodimm modules are available in Ebay, some sellers mention in their listing that the ram module will be different for CPU speed below 1Ghz (low density)and above 1Ghz.or it has got anything to do with the motherboard type?
Thanks and regards to all

The modules for the A21m will be low density PC100 or PC133 SODIMM. With a 256MB module, the way to identify what is low density will be to count the number of individual memory 'chips' that are on the board. There will be 16 of them if it is low density (8 per side). If there are only 8 total (4 per side), then that module is considered "high density" and it will not work in the A21m. The speed of the CPU has no affect on the type of module that can be used; it is the chipset that will dictate what type of memory module is required.

Appropriate DIMM should have 16 chips (8 on each side) to work in your machine - that's for 256MB - and that's what people usually refer to as "low-density"...

And of course, Ray beats me to it... :D

Thanks a lot Mr.Ray and Mr.George.I'll try to get 16 chips 256mb module;but the price quoted is much higher than 8 chips modules.May be it has got to do with the availability of 16 chips modules in the market.
regards,
Ramkumar
