external maximum resolution for X31

#1 Post by LaraM » Mon Jan 25, 2010 2:18 am

Hi everyone,

I am in the market for an external monitor and started by reading the specs for my X31:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 58212.html

That pages lists 2048x1536 as the maximum supported resolution for an external monitor.

My question: will I be able to drive an external monitor at a higher resolution *if I switch off the X31's internal LCD*?

Or is the maximum resolution of the external monitor independent of the internal display being in use?

Many thanks for any insight

lara

The external resolution would be independent of whether or not the X31's LCD is on at the time.

If you are using Windows XP, 4:3 aspect ratio is best, such as 1280x1024. Both Vista and Windows 7 are better at managing wide resolutions. Usually DVI monitors can report resolution to the computer but X31 doesn't support DVI.

Hmm not sure about the X41, but the max I can get out off X41t is 1600x1200, so double check before you buy it.

Even mini dock has a DVI connector, X31 doesn't support it. You can get a full dock then add a video card that do support DVI.

I have run 1680 x 1050 on my X31 while on a Thinkpad Port Replicator II. I am able to run both the external monitor at this resolution, as well as the onboard LCD at 1024 x 768. Since the X31 does not support DVI, I had to do it out the VGA port.

OS doesn't make a difference. X31 has a ATI mobility radeon 7000 which supports resolution up to 2048x1536, so 1680x1050 is ok. Seems it should be able to display HD, but It's probably gonna be a mess with analogue VGA port. Answering your question: NO, you won't be able to go above 2048x1536 whatever you do.
