Look on the bottom of the machine for a (7) digit alpha numeric machine type and model. .e.g. 2347=3CU. Post that number here and we'll help you out.

just under the LCD in the bottom right hand corner there should be a model number - eg, I have an A31, so in the bottom right hand corner just under my LCD it says 'A31'.

Then if you go onto the bottom of your Thinkpad (where the RAM modules etc are located), you should find a Windows license - eg, my A31 came with XP, so I have an XP license sticker (most 2002 - 2007 ThinkPads do!). The license sticker is stuck onto a bit of dark plastic which has 'IBM' written on the top of it. Just to the right of that writing that says 'IBM' (in the top left hand corner), there will be some text that says 'Type - (the number here)' - eg, I have an A31 2652, so it says on the bottom where it says 'Type', it says 'Type - 2652'.

Hope this helps! Tell us which model you get!

Just giving the TYPE, like 2652, is really useless.
On the bottom of every laptop should be a sticker in the format:
TYPE 2366-86U S/N 99-12345
What we need is the 7-character Type-Model in RED.

Product: ThinkPad R40 2681-HTG [change]

Operating system: All [change]

Original description: P4-M 2.0GHz, 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD, 15.0 SXGA+(1400x1050) TFT LCD, 24x10x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD, Wireless upgradeable, Modem(CDC), Ethernet(LOM), Li-Ion battery, IEEE 1394, Secure Chip, Win2000
That is a decent system for normal use. It has a nice high-res screen, usable processor. No wireless is the biggest problem. That ram could use an upgrade if you have the option.

The fan error is probably a collection of dust, try blowing it out gently, or using compressed air. I have never worked on a R40, so I cannot help much with the maintance.

Unless it's an I-series, which do not show the model number like all other Thinkpad models. Looking up the 7-character code on the bottom of the machine is the only way to do it.

R40's are nice machines... :D This laptop will run fine with Windows 2000 or XP. My R40 was a 2681 and had exactly the same specs as the one above, 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD etc and had XP Pro and ran absoloutely fine.
