Never tried, but I think that the general consensus is that you want to get the license, if only for the resale value.

I found this:
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/General-Dis ... C9FC5939FC

"I have an s10-2 and I wanted a rebate on my Windows XP Home installation. The EULA clearly states that I can receive a rebate from the manufacturer. No one I called at Lenovo support was able to help me. Who should I talk to to figure out the details of this rebate?"
Answer:
"I think there may be a bit of misinterpretation here...what the EULA says is that you may choose not to accept it and may return for a refund. Lenovo's policy is that the preload is part of the entire product and we are not refunding Windows OS licenses. (see red highlight section of the return policy)
You may arrange to return the S10-2 if you don't wish to keep the system and the OS license. Our returns policy is as follows:
Return products
Lenovo will accept the return or exchange of a product in its original, sealed package for a full refund in cases of Lenovo error. Returns allowed for any other reason will be subject to a restocking fee equal to 15% of the purchase amount. All returns must be initiated within 21 days of the invoice date
. Lenovo does not provide refunds or credits for portions of a packaged offering provided at a single price or for preloaded programs installed by Lenovo. For service and warranty issues, contact warranty support at 1 800 426 7378. For inquiries relating to third party (non Lenovo) products, contact the third party directly.
To initiate a return, contact 1-866-428-4465 to obtain an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization). Any authorized return must include the product and all accessories in the unopened original packaging, along with all documentation (including invoice, RMA and original shipping label), and must be received at the Lenovo National Return Center within 10 days of obtaining the RMA. Incomplete returns will not be accepted for any reason. Returns that do not follow these steps may be refused by Lenovo, and customer assumes risk of loss and damage for packages returned without an RMA. Please allow 8-10 business days after the item is returned for the processing of your credit.
Best regards,

AFAIK, no one in the U.S. got a refund of this kind, not from Lenovo anyway. A couple of people got away with it in European countries, but not without major struggles, and mostly from other manufacturers if memory still serves me...

Thats too bad. I have a e unused XP licenses from machines that were immediately downgraded to 2000 at purchase. I also have a few unused Vista licenses. Would love to convert those to cash.

Not legally, it is permanently attached to the system it was sold with... read the EULA.

Bill.......

Many many yrs ago ,,,,,, I drive up to the now FAMOUS 'Eping Rd" offices of this SAID SOFTWARE company and proceeded to hand over an OPEN BOX of what I told this lady is "DEFECTIVE WINDOWS SOFTWARE" .....Windows MS_DOS to be exect. The lady kindly asked me the "issues" and I passed her a set of 20 pages of notes and UNSOLVED ISSUES from my FOLDER OF TROUBLE TICKETS
I was then asked to fill out a set of forms ,,,,, and after handing all of things back to her; I actually got a NICELY PRINTED RECEIPT!!!as i drove home "praying that I hadnt made a fool of myself" ,,,,,, all the way back to Collary!!

To my SUPRISE weeks later I got a call from some guy "Iam the MANAGER at MS" and BLah Blah ,,,,, so I go "" where is my MONEY?? its a LEMON MATE" i want my money as the law states under LEMON LAWS of NSW"
.....The manger put me on hold and told me they needed ACTAUL RECEIPTS _ PrOOF of PURCHASE,,, and off i drive all the way back to EEEEPPPPING RD ,,, with my PC , PAPERWORK and all ..............

Weeks later I got a FULL REFUND <TOTAL COST> of my "IBM 5150 sytem " .......

AND am sure the NSW/Aussie LEMON LAW still works , thus the 'extra page' inserted in most MS products now - applies only to Australia & NZ customers !!!

So YES, REFUND CAN BE OBTAINED ..... if you are persistant .. and happen to be an Australia or NZ citizen> not sure LENOVO would EVER do that however !!

Ok Bill....u win you the MASTER GATEKEEPER !!!!
lol...BTW- congrats on an EXCELLNT JOB you and team are doing for this forum !!

but I was tryin to stick to the "subject matter' ,,,,topic of this "thread -windows refund" ........which I got once many years ago !! And I beleive still can be obtained - simply that the fact the::LEMON LAW:: IF its kinda enforced and from what am being told, it dont matter if the suppliers wantto/try to hide under "OEM-SHADOWS" ,,,,them knowly selling any FAULTY software that they - SUPPLIER knows has problems ,,, BLAH BLAH ,,, {{I was given this analagy by our LEGAL TEAM ....e.g. FORD EXPLORER tyre recall in USA and the world... since Ford didnt make the tyres its still was MADE responsible for REPLACEING the faulty tyres that didnt work on its cars/trucks }}
However would I want to join any  "class action" ... i sure would - I would happly DONATE my $300US+ that I paid for my WINDOWS7 to charity if any gains comes my way....So who wants to start one? :thumbs-UP:

cheers matey !!!
