Trouble loading 98SE on a 770 model 95491au 233Mhz

#1 Post by tomstarich » Tue Feb 22, 2005 12:55 pm

Dear Technician,

Thankyou for taking a look at our question. We will return to the question frequently through out the day so your not wasting your time.

We started with a boot disk from boot disk.com to get cd support and to format the HD. After which time we ran the 98SE CD and installed the Operating System.

Problems noted:

1) There were 3 PCI bus controlers in the Hard disk controllers section of the device manager.

As follows:
-Intel 182371AB/EB PCI Bus Mastering Controller (followed by Yellow !)
-Standard Bus Mastering IDE hard Disk controller
-Standard Bus Mastering IDE Hard Disk Controller

We could not get rid of the one with the yellow exclaimation point. --- A conflict the USB because the same words were replicated in the USB hub of the device manager.

We considered the following link for a guide to load the OS.

2)http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... WIK-3VGKTZ

but in the end we used the following link as a guide.

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-48VPPW

We felt IBM was trying to say "Load this in APM style" and included the files and used the commands on the bottom of the page of the

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-48VPPW

link.

After many tries over several weeks to install all drivers and IBM software from the 770 device driver matrix.... Were still lost.

We never got rid of the three entries in the IDE controller section mentioned at the beginnng of this post. Everytime we would delete the Intel 82371AB/EB PCI bus master controller that had a yellow exclaimation point it would always reinstall on reboot with a yellow exclaimation point.

The trouble is we felt that the computer only needed two PCI bus master controllers and the third one was in error.

It looks like we need some serious direction to achieve the loading of the WIN98SE operating system on this very old 770 computer model 95491AU to a blank hard disk.

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Did you copy over the contents of Supplement File Diskette IV to the cab location prior to running the setup of Windows 98? if you did not there are a large number of problems you will be unable to resolve. Do a search of the support pages for w98sfdit.exe and follow the instructions. You will need to blow away your present install and start over.

We looked at the Supplemental Files Diskette

We looked at the Supplemental files diskette and thought it was for the 770E and above. We will start over and reload using the supplemental files diskette and see what happens. Thank you.

Thank you for suggesting the supplemental Files

#4 Post by tomstarich » Wed Feb 23, 2005 8:47 pm

Loading with the 98 supplemental files as you said and following IBM instructions on their website resloved the hard disk controller issue and many others just like you said.

We are finished loading all the drivers and the media-matics dvd player. Although we loaded all the drivers for the dvd playback in the correct order. Our DVD player did not work.

As instructedby IBM
"Before installing mpeg drivers, make sure that you have installed the following software in the computer:
- Video Features IV for Windows 95/98
- Audio Features for Windows 95/98:
- And the mediamatics DVD Express Player and its update.

Finally the Enhanced video drivers were installed.
and of course we have an EVA card in the 770

We are almost done with loading Windows 98SE on our 770 model 95491au but could use a little help...

because "Our Mediamatics DVD Player Did not work"

Are we using the correct drivers?

#5 Post by tomstarich » Thu Feb 24, 2005 12:08 am

We are having trouble getting the DVD playback for the 770 up and running.

We used MPEG driver IV for Windows 98/2000 - Thinkpad 770 for the driver for our MPEG card. this is Document ID - DSHY-46FRPA

http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.ws ... SHY-46FRPA

The symptoms of the failed playback are:
0)A DVD is placed in the DVD drive
1)Mediamatics DVD Express opens ok when when selected from progrms
2)I hit the green triangle to start the play of the DVD
3)Then I get a black screen.
The led numbers on the display for the disk chapters kinda flash
but nothing no picture.

4)Then I hit play again - I have a black screen still
5)The screen remains jet black
Pressing the eject button does eject at this point so I eject with the button on the side of the physical dvd drive.

I try pushing DVD drive door closed once again and hitting play.
6)I noticed the chapter numbers just go consecutively through the chapters very fast (5 chapters per second)

3)I can see the DVD player trying to read, you can hear it skipping through the chapter file the numbers of the chapters as the chapter numbers go by very fast on the Media-Matics Display.

But still a jet black screen. The disk continues to try to read but it stays a jet black screen.

I tried loading the interactual player.
When it starts it loads the lower 1/2 of the picture and just freezes.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the sad story....
Any assistance would surely result in a round of applause from here in

Glad to hear my suggestion worked .. those supplimental files are tricky devils .. tell me has the DVD drive on this machine ever played video back for you successfully? If so, are you trying a home made DVD or a store bought version?

DVD playback worked prior to the reload of Win 98SE

#7 Post by tomstarich » Thu Feb 24, 2005 8:58 am

The DVD Drive played prior to the reload of SE, we have tried several store bought DVD's.

We don't have any copied DVD's on hand to try on this machine.

Were downloading a trial version of Power DVD to try and would like to update the firmware on the CD/DVD drive.

Do you know how to look up the firm ware update on the Ibm website\

Also since the supplemental files worked... would you like us to close this quesiton and move the DVD question over to a separate posting---

You can try loading the mpeg feature drivers again.....the 770 is very picky in the order you install the drivers to get the DVD player working properly...(only need the mpeg drivers for W2k and XP.).....If I remember right, the order is.....Video drivers....Mpeg feature drivers....Original DVDExpress(available on Bill's FTP site...)....then the DVDExpress Update from the 770 driver matrice ibm site....then the mpeg feature drivers again(as they get corrupted)....

But if you have it available to you,I would suggest W2k,as you only need the mpeg feature drivers installed, then windows media player plays back DVD's as smooth as ever...!!!

Hope this helps..!!!

Later....

DVD Player not working.

#9 Post by tomstarich » Sat Feb 26, 2005 8:40 pm

We had to start over again... because we were loading the IBM DVD Decoder Card this was the driver ment for the 770Z on our IBM 770.

DVD symptoms are a black screen during playback. The hard disk flickers like the DVD player is working and the light on the drive flashes like the DVD is reading.

We have been around the block a few times on this reload. We found one of our mistakes.... which was "No way using a 770Z mpeg driver would work on a 770...

After another complete 98SE install from scratch including the suplemental files and the correct Mpeg driver as found on the link below.

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... SHY-3ZNV2Z

Were getting the black screen during playback mentioned at the beginnng of this reply.

We even used the links found on the Mpeg driver page to locate and install the video adapter, and crystal audio drivers.

We used an original IBM CD of the DVD Express and then did the DVD Express Update followed by reinstalling the Mpeg driver once more.

Were loosing this game... after many reloads and tries we could sure use some help getting our dvd player going.

We created a new post:

Black DVD Player Screen, Ibm 770 WinSE Has got us stumped

And followed through with the problem for a while. With Lack of support for Windows 98SE and No help for this aging computer from IBM were out of luck.

This thread is dead and we will not return to it. Recommend others not waste as much time trying to get IBM 770's to play DVD's with out simply reloading the original software on a separate partition and then loading a new operating system on a second partition and making the machine dual boot. In this way you can have the best of both worlds.

You can use the original load to play DVD's and the other OS of your dual boot machine for general purpous daily work

I have done this with some 770 and made a Win98 Factory Load for DVD's and then a second Xp load to handle everything else.

good luck to all who follow and a Big Thank you for all who took interest in our question an posted.
