62P4553 adapter; conversion to accept SATA HDD?

#1 Post by bobox » Fri Jan 29, 2010 1:11 pm

Folks,

I'm working - slowly but, thanks to this forum, definitively - towards a HDD replacement for my trusty T42 23734WG

Although I'd set me heart on a Seagate Momentus it seems they're out of production, so it'll be a WesternDigital of some sort that'll go in. Given what I've read here about the support which aftermarket HDD provide for the famous/infamous HPA/predesktoparea I've decided to go without that and have alternative recovery plans .... most probably on a secondary HDD in the slimbay adapter .

My question is could this be a SATA HDD? I read somewhere that the slimbay adapter can be adapted to accept SATA HDD, and which would mean at least one of the HDD I'll need to buy would head into obsolescence less rapidly.

Can anyone help with the details of this SATA HDD into PATA adapter magic?

TIA
M

The 62P4553 is for PATA disks.
For SATA you need 40Y8725 : http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0092128299

Ah. Thank you. You can tell I'm new to this? (-:

Am I right in thinking that the adapter takes care of the SATA to PATA conversion?
Or is there a need to change drivers (within Device Manager my controllers under
IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers are
Intel 82801DBM Ultra ARA storage Controller - 24CA
Primary IDE Channel
Secondary IDE Channel

both the primary and secondary IDE channels use a MS driver 01/07/2001 v5.1.2600.1106 .... would this need updated?

TIA

Just stick it in, format it and off you go.

Hi,

I've recently did a similar upgrade to my T41 with one of the drive caddys over ebay and it worked great together with a modern WD Scorpio Blue drive for the past week without problems. Seeing that most of the PATA-SATA drive caddys are not original IBMs, you might want to check this out(the one I bought) here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 5775wt_939

It only cost me a grand total of USD$20 inclusive of shipping and took about a week to get to me, and like RealBlackStuff said, just pop in the HD and Windows will detect and format the new harddisk. Seems like the same product to me as the one that goes for USD$55 shipped(which is actually more than what I paid for a new scorpio blue). :D

Sounds good - I'll take a look. Thanks.
