Difference between T30 Models (2366-86U, -4U5, -M5U)??

#1 Post by john1in2 » Sat Jan 30, 2010 1:57 pm

What is the difference between the T30 models. I have a 2366-M5U and am having hardware difficulty.

I want to pop the newly restored to OEM condition HDD for my M5U into a 2366-86U or 4U5, will it work or will it be a problem?

Plug those Type numbers in here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... eLenovo.do

You will be able to see the difference in the configurations as they left the factory.

Shouldn't be any problem swapping HDD between models. There may be differences is LCD resolution, and some other hardware, but the system boards are similar enough that you shouldn't have problems.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

There were so many sub-versions of T30 that it's not even funny, but the essence comes to this:

a) Two generations of motherboards, the later one has enhanced support for CPUs faster than 2.0 Ghz

b) Three types of fan, must be matched according to the CPU used

c) Two types of LCD (XGA/SXGA+) by various manufacturers, each calls for its own inverter and LCD cable type...

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the information.

Since we are on the topic, could you pop in the T30 Hard disk (OEM condition) into a T20 or T40 and have it work?

My guess would be that you couldn't, hardware is way too different, Windows would BSOD.

I have put hard disks from older Thinkpads into newer ones. Generally you will have to install drivers for hardware not supported on the older machine. In the case of T-23 and T-30 you will have few problems. T-40 is a bit different. But R-40 is pretty similar. Check the Driver Matrix and see which drivers are unique to each machine and you will have to reinstall those.
