Problems with my DVD/CD-RW Drive

When I put any CD or DVD disc in, you can hear it whirring and clicking, but it doesn't fire up and doesn't recognize the disk.
When I insert a DVD, the message in WMP classic is "Cannot find DVD directory"
iTunes cannot find CD's which I insert.
Any advice for this issue?
