WXGA+ screen for 14" T61

#1 Post by wap32 » Mon Feb 01, 2010 3:56 am

Lately my ThinkPad's LCD has been freaking out. (it's a 14" WXGA+ model)
Random white lines that sometimes get stuck until I wiggle the screen.

This is not the fault of the video cable, but of the LCD's internal flex cable.
Since the screen already has a few stains and bright spots on the background, I'll be replacing it instead of trying to fix it.

So, is the best choice to just go with the official Lenovo part no?
Are the T400 CCFL LCD's any better, or are any better third-party models?

Thanks in advance for the help

I have not found any difference between T61 and T400. I assume your machine is not still under warranty. If it is, you should get it replaced that way. I try to use the real Lenovo screens. I have not had good luck with aftermarket ones.

Is it possible the “freaking out” is a symptom of the nVIDIA 140M problems? It’s been suggested you try an external monitor to determine if the symptoms persist:

No, no problems whatsoever on external monitors.

It's clearly the LCD, if I open it in specific positions the symptoms will show, and if I wiggle it back they'll go away.

Nope, no warranty. I guess I'll just get the same screen then.

I've seen some supposedly original FRUs on ebay at ~$110, shipped from HK and Taiwan.
Any reason I should expect them to be fakes or otherwise not genuine? Is this a common occurrence?

Thanks for the help guys.

Just a reminder. Some (few) nvidia problems only affect LCD. (VGA OK)

Still doubt it's the gfx card.

If I press the LCD on the left side (where the internal flex cable sits) I can clearly see stripes of pixels going white.
Once I manage to get the screen on a position where there are no problems it will stay that way all day long.

Can anyone comment/give advice on buying the screen on eBay (see above)?
