R50 Thinkpad -- Board replacement

#1 Post by RonW » Wed Feb 03, 2010 2:27 am

The problem: Turn it on after a couple minutes it powers right off. Won't power back on again. Pull out the battery and power cord, hold in power button to drain the power, plug it back up and it powers back on but same thing powers back down again.

Thought maybe this might of been heat issue but I don't hear the fan speeding up but I do hear it come on non the less I think the board just needs to be replaced IMHO. Found this on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-THINKPAD-R51-R5 ... 5190264840 if I was going to buy a board -- the board alone costs this much might as well get one that someone wants to part out this one appears to have just about everything except the LCD and I dont need that lol

Thoughts? Anyone else with this same issue ?

Run TPFancontrol and see how high the temps get before it powers off.

It doesnt boot into windows shuts off before it gets past the XP splash screen. I get maybe 45 seconds of uptime before it shuts down. The uptime of the laptop is the same almost everytime 35-45 seconds doesn't matter where it posts it eventually shuts off. Definitely not long enough for me to get CPU temps.

Since it won't cost you anything (other than time), I'd be sure it's not the CPU temp. I was caught off guard a couple of times when I booted up T4x or R5x boards with just the CPU and a fan, but no thermal paste, they shut down very quickly. Perhaps the thermal paste is shot or missing? Without it, the CPU does set off a sensor very quickly.

However, I suppose if you always have to "drain the power" before it will start, even after waiting five to ten minutes, then it may not be the CPU.
