Intel Wifi Link 5300 AGN from Lenovo not working in another

#1 Post by Eclipse » Wed Feb 03, 2010 6:22 am

Hi all!

New here so...please don't shoot :)
I have a problem with a Intel 5300 wireless card pulled from a damaged beyond repair Lenovo laptop.
This card is working perfectly in other Lenovo laptop but refuse to work in a MSI one (tested with the same results on a Aspire One also), throwing a "Code 10 device cannot start message).

After some research it seems that the card is made specifically for Lenovo and cannot be used in another computers.
I wonder if anybody knows a way to make this card work in the MSI laptop? Maybe some trick like card firmware change?
I have tried Intel site drivers, Lenovo site drivers etc but same result.
Details:
MSI 720EX;
Windows 7 Bussiness 64-bit
Card: pci\ven_8086&dev_4236; I have noticed that the non-lenovo cards have dev_4235.
SPS: 506679-001B
Thanks in advance,
Dorin

I don't know if firmware update is possible, but you can try to change the Vendor number in the .inf file to see if that works.

I've tried that already. Driver is installing but is not starting.
I have seen questions around the net about Lenovo laptops not accepting generic wireless cards but this is quite the opposite.

Maybe has something to do with the bios, as the card is working great in an identical laptop (chipset, memory etc), only difference beeing that it was HP made.

P.S. I agree about something: Guinness is the best :)

i think its an FCC type problem..

these cards are tested with certain notebooks and i suppose some regulations forces manufacturers to "lock" each card to that particular hardware platform..

and my further guess would be that firmware is the only way to "unlock" the card..

how you would go about doing that is, as our glorious and dear leader here in the USA says: "above my pay grade".. :)

Try the HP card in your MSI, if that works, ask the HP owner if he agrees to swap cards.

It's a 802.11G Broadcom. I'm sure he would like to swap them :)
