Do you Shutdown or Standby before transporting?
Do you Shutdown or Standby before transporting?
I've always shutdown my laptops completely before transporting them. But recently I noticed a few of my co-workers just putting their T41's in standby mode before taking off.
What do you do?
Does anyone have any info on what exactly happens in standby mode?

If I remember right (and I know this is written somewhere on Microsoft's website), it just provides power to the volatile memory and shutsdown all hard drives, LCDs, ports (this I'm certain of because I've had things connected that were USB bus powered or hooked to PCMCIA items or the VGA connector that shutoff), and the processor. So then there are only 2 things drawing power: RAM and a reduced amount to the motherboard (to sense keyboard triggers and to power the LED)

Standby Mode :
Windows doesn't compain and the networks always find themselves when
I re-open the lid, so now I rarely ever shutdown. In any event just before the machine goes into standby I believe all the system caches are flushed so there is no real danger off losing any work.
PS: Although I do leave applications open I tend to save my work just before closing the lid.

I do standaby once in a while, but for some reason I'm not confortable with the led of the CD-ROM drive on all the time.
Should it is stay on?

I standby as i'm too impatient to wait for boot ups - it causes me no hassle especially with access connections automatically changing my network settings depending on where i am. The only time it is a problem is when i have a legacy program running that prevents suspend and I end up with a very warm ThinkPad and Bag and a lovely BSOD
Re: I hybernate...
If you mean the LED next to the bay release on the bottom of the unit, then the answer is yes, it should stay on. It's a warning to NOT attempt to remove the drive while the machine is in standby.atlacatl wrote:I do standaby once in a while, but for some reason I'm not confortable with the led of the CD-ROM drive on all the time.

If you meant the LED on the front of the drive tray, then the answer in NO, it's not normal and shouldn't be on while the machine is in standby.

Standbye
I do only standbye, or sometimes very rarely if I know i am not going to be using it for a long time I'll do a hibernate or shutdown.
But, warning to users who travel a lot and throw their bags around. Make sure NOT to put your battery settings to HIBERNATE after xxx hours, at all. When you do this, even if you do a shutdown, the laptop will wakeup after a while and go to full hibernation, but you won't know when it is going to happen, so it could be right when you are loading it on the xray machiner, tossing it into the overhead bin, or other.
I always disable the hibernation and even hae a travel setting that does this.
