Installing new Atheros B/G card slows bootup?

#1 Post by fongalv » Sat Feb 06, 2010 12:37 am

Hi guys,

I have just received and installed the card i got from here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWNX:IT into my T41P
I got it booted into Win7 and did a windows update via LAN cable and the update identified it as an Atheros wireless card and installed the drivers so I can now access the internet via the new wireless card.

Unfortunately I have realised(after repeated attempts) that my boot up times suddenly increased from 30s+ to over 4 mins now. It is "stuck" longest in the "starting windows" screen. It was still working fine right until I installed the new wireless card so I was wondering if anyone knows what could be a possible cause for the extreme slowdown at bootup? For the record, shutdown works fine(took <10s).

Thanks in advance!

Just a long shot. Maybe Windows is looking for a network that's not there?

In Windows, try going to Administrative Tools, Event Viewer and look at the list in System to see if there are errors or warnings that are hanging your startup. They are listed by date and time so you may be able to determine what isn't loading correctly.

I have narrowed down the problem to something thats got to do with the PATA-SATA caddy that I have. Nothing I do fixed the problem of the loong bootup, until I did a fresh install, now it works somewhat, but still cranky.

Previously, either the wireless card couldn't be detected, or the HD in the caddy couldn't be detected. After trying for a couple more times, the wireless card just stopped working(nothing showed up when the wireless network icon in system tray was clicked), the installing of the WDC ide adapter also kept popping up with every boot.

After I did a fresh install, for the first time, the wireless card connected to a network while the harddisks were also detected and I coold install programs into them(hurray!). BUT after a few more boots, I can still constantly get wireless connection, but the HD would not detect within windows even though each boot windows will attempt to detect and install the WDC adapter.

I believe the increased boot time was caused by the HD not being detected, hence installed programs could not find files, etc. I also placed some of the virtual memory into those "undetectable" drives...seems like some sort of I/O error? Is there anyway to check for conflicts? Device Manager reported the atheros card to be "working correctly" though I don't remember seeing anything that says otherwise...

Do note that it was working perfectly BEFORE I installed the atheros :(
