Direct2D on T41 -Is it possible model 2373 1HU

#1 Post by T400plus » Sun Feb 07, 2010 5:34 am

Does the chip on T41 meet the basic needs for DIRECT2D. I have windows 7 running with only
some problems(File control dialog,large image transparency...).
I was instructed to start using direct2D for better image display.
I am using vs2008 team edition SP1 c++(vanilla).

1.5GB memory,120 MB HD,1.6 GHZ cpu,14 " LCD..

What I know about Direct2D is that it is a 2-D graphics API that was written for Windows 7. That implies that you need a GPU and a driver that supports it. My opinion is that the ATI Radeon 7500 in a T41 has neither W7 GPU or W7 driver support. If you find out differently please let us know.

from the MSDN writeup---
For scenarios where the use of hardware acceleration is not feasible, Direct2D includes a high-performance software rasterizer. When rendering in software, applications that use Direct2D experience substantially better rendering performance than with GDI+ and with similar visual quality. The software rasterizer is also designed for use in a service context.
I am downloading the widows 7 sdk to get the direct2D library...
cheers...Be happy that there are still programmers around ... :)

Added:the windows sdk comes with direct2d which worked on the T41 (the poor persons ancient Thinkpad). I will try to do away with GDI+ altogether!
