T60 and Win 7 64bit
T60 and Win 7 64bit
I have a T60 model 2007-72u that when I try to load Win 7 64bit on it tells me that the cpu is not compatilble with a 64bit mode. It is an Intel Centrino Duo T2500. Should this be able to run Win 7 64bit?

Re: T60 and Win 7 64bit
Your T60 needs one of the following Core 2 Duo processors to run any 64-bit OS.
T5500/T5600/T7200/T7400/T7600
T5500/T5600/T7200/T7400/T7600
Core 2 Duo T7600, 3GB DDR2-667 RAM, Main 7K320 320GB 7200RPM + Ultrabay 320GB 5400RPM, ATI FireGL V5250, 15" IPS UXGA, DVDRW, Bluetooth, Atheros ABGN, NMB Keyboard, Fingerprint, Win7 Pro X86 + Vista 64-bit SP2, Advanced Dock.

Then Centrino Duo's are not true dual core processors?

Re: T60 and Win 7 64bit
Who told you they were? Only the Core 2 Duos have the 64 bit extensions that allow them to run 64 bit software.

Re: T60 and Win 7 64bit
No one told me they were. I assumed since they were dual core processors they should be able to run it. Now I know better. Thanks.

They are dual-core alright. They are just not 64-bit.

Re: T60 and Win 7 64bit
Since T60s can only see about 3 GB or so of memory (See the sticky on memory limits for T60s and T61s) there's not much
point in running a 64 bit OS AFIK.

Re: T60 and Win 7 64bit
There's a difference between dual-core and 64bit. Your CPU has two cores but is 32 bit only, that's why Windows complains. You would have to upgrade the CPU from a Core Duo that you have to a Core 2 Duo, like T7200 for instance. However, as twillis449 pointed out, you should ask yourself if this is worth it as these CPUs cost a bit and you won't be able to use more than 3GB of RAM anyway (due to a chipset limitation and true for the whole T60/T60p line).SgtZeke wrote:Then Centrino Duo's are not true dual core processors?

Re: T60 and Win 7 64bit
I put Win 7 32 on it with 2 gig of ram and it runs fine. Thanks for all the input.

Re: T60 and Win 7 64bit
Centrino is a sticker, not a processor. A laptop with a Centrino Duo sticker can have either a Core Duo or a Core 2 Duo processor, both of which are dual-core, but only the latter is 64-bit.SgtZeke wrote:Then Centrino Duo's are not true dual core processors?
(The sticker also implies an Intel chipset and an Intel wireless adapter).
