T42 Dead Motherboard
T42 Dead Motherboard
Hi,
I have a T42 with a dead motherboard. Everything else seems fine, CPU monitor, etc as I have tried them on another T42.
I can get a T42 motherboard off ebay easy enough.
Am I wasting my time and I could just as well get a T43 and add the CPU and Screen to this?
Is the plastic chassis the same too?
Many Thanks in advance
Mark

Re: T42 Dead Motherboard
Hi Mark and welcome to the forums
When you say the board is dead, do any of the indicators light up on the display, or the fan run?
Check the fuses on the board first if you have a testmeter, especially F2 by the power connector, which is the main fuse for the board and dqn blow.
If you can't check it, PM me and I'll have a look at it for you.

Hi Nick,
Thanks for your reply.
yes the fan starts and the lights come on, but that's about it.
I've looked at your PDF and there appears to be many fuses. None of which look easy for me to replace.
Is this something that is usually returned to someone like yourself for repair?
The laptop is at home today.
I return to my initial question, is it possible to just fit my screen to a T43.
The reason I'm interested in a T43 over a T42 is that it's ATI video drivers are Windows 7 supported and thus I can get back to the full set of video modes including 1920 x 1280 which I can't get with T42 & Windows 7 currently.
Many Thanks
Mark

Re: T42 Dead Motherboard
Hi Mark
Bad news is that the T42 may have an unsoldered graphics chip which I can repair for you using Infra red reflowing. See the blue banner at the top of the page for more details and / or send me an email to nick@reflowrepairs.com and I'll send you further details and a quote.
Regarding the screen swap, that should be OK too providing you swap over the complete T42 screen and lcd cable (ie don't remove the screen from the T42 lid and put it in the T43 lid).

Thanks Again Nick,
One last question.
Will a T43 motherboard slot straight into the T42 case I have?
Many Thanks

Re: T42 Dead Motherboard
It will fit in the case, however, you'll need new CPU, fan, RAM and slot cage.
