Thanks Guys I won't be buying that till september till I go back to school. Or at least until I get over the fact that I spent $2000 dollars on a laptop. It will be worth it but to see $2000 dollars to go away. i still need money for books.

G-Man,

How did you determine which models are bluetooth-upgradable? I'm looking at the 2378-FVU and find that to be great news.

Will I still have to scratch the LED cover strip (from the inside) to see the bluetooth LED light up? The hack job I did on my T41 looks pretty nasty! :) It would be great if the strip came with the bluetooth icon on it already.

It's very simple. If you have a 14" model you go here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-46502 if you have a 15" model you go here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-55304 For 14" models check section 5, for 15" models check section 4 (Bluetooth wireless antenna assembly). If your machine is listed, then the BT antenna is already installed in the LCD.

According to csv96, the LED cover is really just a cover. The BT led is already there. I never did the BT LED cover install, but csv96 did, and he used a razor. Well, looking at my non-BT LED cover, you definetely have to use something very thin.

G-Man

It's definitely more of a sticker than a plastic cover.

Actually, credit should go to tselling for discovering this upgrade possibility on her 237358U (old post on the original forum I think). ;)

Where would I start looking for the PN on that sticker? I'm interested in the one for the outside of the case as well.

Which raises the question: Why would you need to know the status of bluetooth when your laptop case is closed? Wireless is not indicated there, so why is bluetooth?

It's in the link in G-Man's post above. Scroll down to the very bottom and look for "Clear plate". The part actually comes with 4 stickers (front non-bluetooth, front bluetooth, back non-bluetooth, back bluetooth).

I think you can set your computer to wake on Bluetooth command so the indicator on the back of the screen lets you know that Bluetooth is on while your computer is suspended with the lid closed.

Unfortunately your TP is not Bluetooth upgradeable, meaning that the Bluetooth antenna is not built in the LCD. Some models come with Bluetooth antenna already in the LCD. These models can be easily upgraded with Bluetooth by switching the 56k modem daughter card with a Bluetooth and modem combo daughter card. So, either use a PCMCIA Bluetooth card, or a USB one.
G-man, you amaze me. How do you find all these esoteric links like the bluetooth led antenna tape cover?

Anyway, where do I find the bluetooth/modem daughter card you mentioned? And how much? How to install?

Thanks.

You can find the FRU part number here (section 8.). Depending on what TP you have (T40/p, T41/p, T42/p), copy/paste the FRU number into here and order it. The price of the IBM Integrated Bluetooth III with 56K Modem (BMDC-2) for T42/p is $66.50, the IBM Integrated Bluetooth with 56K Modem (BMDC) for T40/p, T41/p is $90.75.

Instrucion of removing and installing the modem daughter card:

Tape for Bluetooth wireless antenna (section 9.):

The tape is only required if you plan to buy and install the bluetooth wireless antenna in the LCD screen. Otherwise all you really need is the card.

I noticed in the new TABOOK some of the thinkpads have CDCmodem/bluetooth ... does this mean you already have the blue tooth card in there and it is ready to roll right out of the box or is this just in reference to the antenna and the card still has to be upgraded
2373-9XU ... will be on it's way soon

Yep, those models already have the Bluetooth antenna and card, so they are ready to roll.
