Walking with the Thinkpad still on

#1 Post by plasdom » Wed Feb 23, 2005 6:49 pm

I have a t42 and I since I move around so much usually juts close it while it is still on, and then reopen it when I move to a new location. Is this harmful pratice? Is there a better way?

Fn+F4 does not seem to put it to sleep.

some will tell you it's not a good practice...... all I can tell you is that I have done the same practice for years with no ill effects......

If you close it, it should suspend. Just wait 5 seconds or so for the suspend light to come on, and go wherever you want. I pick up my T41 occasionally and walk up or downstairs with it. I don't close it, partly because of sloth, and partly because the Hard Drive protection system kicks in. If I want to move it over a distance, I close it (which suspends it). ... JD Hurst

Moving the computer while it is still on is a really bad habit. The hdd- the part that stores all of your precious data- has many moving parts. One false move, and you risk losing some or all of your data, plus precious time fixing your hdd, or worse having to replace it altogether.

You are far better off putting it into "Stand By" before you move it. Either use the start menu, or Fn+F4. In your case, since Fn+F4, doesnt work, I would first check your battery settings, if that doesn't work consider restoring your system, and as a last resort maybe check for a BIOS update.

= sloth. Yup. :)

I lost a 60Gb hard drive to the big Air Bag debacle, so I know all about that, and I keep my critical stuff on two or three drives on two computers.

The firmware in the first 7K60's did not work with the first version of HardDrive Protection System (Air Bag software). An uncerimonious crash, that was that, and everything was gone. My backup was over 98 percent so I moved forward with a new drive, new firmware and new HD Protection software. ... JD Hurst

You can program your thinkpad to beep until the HDD has fully shut down after you have closed the lid.

To do this, first click the battery icon on the task bar (when you are running off the mains it is a black plug) > Launch Battery Maximiser Wizard > click next until you get to step 2: Global settings - setting Power switches. Here you must check the box labelled 'Beep until computer enters standby/suspend or hibernation mode.

Your laptop will now make an impressive 16 or so beeps before shutting down causing anyone within earshot to make the tiresome comment: "it's gonna blow", or words to that effect.

As long as you have the machine set to suspecd with the lid closed, or at the very least have the Active Drive Protection engaged, you should be fine. The majority of drive replacements are caused by impact damage while the platter/platters are still moving .. so if you don't suspend or have the ADP enabled, count on a drive failure in the future.

Why not just hibernate? Doesn't take long.

Hibernate takes too long. It is very similar to shutdown/startup with the exception that all programs you were running are maintained. Suspend just starts up immediately I open the thinkpad and I just resume my work. I have the HD protection going and it does suspend when I close the lid

Well I can tell you that as a techie I always hated Hibernation, that is until I actually started using it. Depending on the presently running applications, generally I can hibernate in less than 20 seconds, and get back up and running in about the same. The savings in battery life are pretty good, and there is no drive damage to worry about.

You are configured for the best possible chances against drive damage, but seriously hibernation is not what it once was .. I use it all the time now.

I have the display set to "Do nothing" when closed as my machines will often be in a dock or simply sitting around chewing on something with the display closed.

Suspend is your friend! Takes less time than hibernate and it's completely safe to carry your beloved Thinkpad around when suspended. Most of mine have been, literally, around the world while suspended.

No, I mean completely the opposite!

Suspend = Standby = Fn+F4

Hibernate = Off = Fn+F12

what is, technically speaking, the difference between standby and hibernate? more components turned off in the latter case?

Standby = The computer keeps power to memory, but powers off HDD, CPU, Video, and just about everything else. So, if you lost power during standby, "Poof!', all your data would be gone.

Hibernate = All of the contents of RAM are copied to the HDD. Everything is then turned off. When you resume from a hibernate, the OS copies the data from the HDD back into RAM.

lets see, its 4:30 am and time for bed so i did not read ALL the posts, above..

T42 has HDD protection..

accelerometer that parks the HDD when it detects movement..

so does the X40 for that matter..
