T42 new HDD, new XP install II: HDD cover query (WG1600BEVE)

#1 Post by bobox » Sat Feb 13, 2010 11:46 am

Folks,

Working towards a HDD upgrade for T42 2373 4WG. I've just taken the old (Fujitsu 40GB) HDD out, ready to pop that new WD1600BEVE in ... but couldn't help noticing how seemingly 'unprotected' the underside of the WD HDD is relative to the Fujitsu. By underside I mean the side that doesn't have a metal plate & label detailing all the specs.

The Fujitsu HDD is solidy encased all around in metal - seems sturdy, well protected. No wonder it survived 6 years of abuse. By contrast the WD HDD has but one metal face (with label); the flip side is essentially unprotected, with the backside of a PCB exposed. This is hugely different from the Fujitsu unit, the corresponding face of which is protected first by a sheet of film and then a perforated metal plate.

As I've said, new territory for me, but am I missing something here?
Or am I simply looking at a case of "That's the way they're made these days?"

Hoping for a simple answer ...

remove the 4 screws and metal caddy from the Fujitsu and mount them the same way on your new HD.

ahhh! (-: Now that was a simple (and straightforward) answer. Thank you. Now the WD1600BEVE looks sturdy, well-protected and likely to last 6 years of abuse. I'm amused. It's good to laugh at one's own caution sometimes LOL. Enjoy the weekend
