General Software Question

#1 Post by seattleike » Sat Feb 13, 2010 12:53 pm

I am asking this on this forum because I love the advice I get here and hoping someone can help me.

I am looking for advice on software to mirror my laptop files to my home computer. I could either be present to sync or do over internet. Any recomendations would be great.

Absolutely!!

I gave up on Offline File Sync as it breaks just for looking at it. I went to SyncBack Pro, and have never once looked back. One very nice feature is that it works on XP Pro, Vista Business and Windows 7 Pro. Most highly recommended.

Might have to check this out myself. I have been looking for a new backup solution since my current solution does not support Windows 7 (I admit that I have been procrastinating in this area lately...).

Windows Vista and Windows 7 already have a fast file copy utility called "RoboCopy". Easy to run once a user sets up the batch files for it. Instructions are a little geeky, but people here could help you. It is extremely fast.

Not sure if it fits your needs, but I use a program called Unison. The main reasons I use it are:

1) Free & open-source
2) Cross-platform (I sync my Fedora box at the office with my laptop, which has a shared drive for Arch Linux and Windows 7)
3) User-level, since I don't have root access at work.

It's pretty bare bones, but I don't need much. I chose to build my own, but pre-built binaries are available.
