Removing SYMANTEC
Removing SYMANTEC
Hi. Are there any successful, relatively easy routes to remove this worse than a virus called Symantec. I tried add/remove, Uninstall Pro and dragged all I could find to the trash and its still is a PITA and at too many times pops up with interruptions. It’s ruining a otherwise good running T60 XP system. Please, I’m a KISS person and not very bright about these things. TYIA

Re: Removing SYMANTEC
Find the version you are running (most likely Norton and not Corporate Symantec). Go to www.symantec.com and search for uninstall and also for removal. Find the uninstall / removal tool for your product and version, print out the instructions, download the tool, and proceed with the removal. ... JDH

Re: Removing SYMANTEC
After uninstalling and running the Symantec removal tool, you might also run CCleaner or something similar, you will still find some extraneous entries in your registry.

Re: Removing SYMANTEC
This was a used T60 with XP so models of SW that can't be seen are unavailable. There is NO outward evidence of anything Symantec in programs, add/remove or Uninstall Pro. I have gone the Symantec removal route and, get this, it informs me that it needs something to the effect of having to have Symantec removed before it can perform it’s job then vanishes! I've also run CC and probably did some other good. And again there is NO Symantec or Norton folder in Programs.

Check program files\common files\
There might be a symantec folder there. I work for Symantec. If there is Symantec software on the machine, the correct removal tool will get it. If you can't find it--the removal tool can't, install a trial of Norton Internet Security 2010 and then run its removal tool. It will clean it all out.
However, you might want to give 2010 a try. The product is NOT the same product as three or even two years ago. If you don't want to, that is fine too. There are plenty of free antivirus programs available. PCTOOLS makes a nice one...yes Symantec owns it but it is run completely separate and independent.
There are also manual removal instructions on Symantec.com. Google it. I have had to do manual removals during a few beta cycles...it is a pain but it is documented well on the support site.

RevoUninstaller (http://www.revouninstaller.com/) is also a good option if the Symantec Removal Tool doesn't get the job done for you. It has several options for completely removing just about any program.
