X31 wont power up regularly motherboard problem?

#1 Post by blink » Sun Feb 14, 2010 4:20 pm

Hi all i own an x31 but recently purchased another spares/repairs x31. This x31 doesnt power up very often, infact only twice so far in many attempts. First when it arrived by chance & again one time after holding power button with batt & ac disconnected for an age & then reconnecting both. When psu is attached it seems to charge the battery but wont power up. The battery/charge light comes on & sometimes also a little amber light near the modem on the rear.
Any suggestions or tips on whether it can be saved - The keyboard & screen are in better condition than my working x31 & the faulty one also has a faster processor so it would be nice to get in up & running if poss so any tips would be very much appreciated.
Many Thanks for any advice, shared knowledge & wisdom is a wonderful thing.

Well, you can swap the keyboard and screens ... at least you'd improve your older x31 ...

I used to have the power issue all the time. I thought it was a capacitor issue (and might still have been, as a symptom.) But it turns out that one of the electrical shields (for lack of a better word) inside the lap had moved, and was allowing the system to occasionally short. When I did a cleaning on the internals a few months back, I double-checked the position of the shield versus the manual's image, and realized it was off. Since I replaced it, I haven't had a single issue. So ... suggestion: if you have the manual (lenovo has them online for free), and the time, open her up and make sure everything is connected properly!

Many Thanks for taking the trouble to reply Jon. Unfortunately im not very 'handy' when it comes to stuff like this & am disabled with dexterity issues so swapping the screens will be beyond me. I could probably mange the keyboard though & I wil definately have a look around inside but unless its really straight forward im afraid it will be beyond me. Oh any tips for cleaning the inside? Is compressed air a good idea?
Also as luck would have it i have just got my working x31 stuck to an ultrabase i have just bought :(
