T40 Memory problem -> Freeze

#1 Post by fasteez » Sun Feb 14, 2010 8:49 pm

Hi,

A friend's friend T40 hang while booting the OS, it's a sudden complete freeze of the machine, always coming at ~2 sec after the OS boots. I ran the Pc-Doctor test suite, everything's fine except the Memory Test, who causes the same kind of freeze. AFAIK memory failures are more random than that and usually causes BSOD or inconsistencies, that's the first time I encounter such freezes.

I wonder if someone have seen that before ? and if it's the memory modules or .... worse some chip on the mobo ( some software bug made windows uses the cpu 100% almost all the time.. I fear a component might have melt or something )

Thanks in advance, bye

Hi,

Could be both the memory and could be other thing.. however, I would start by resetting / swapping the memory modules and see if you can make the behavior change or be fixed, and even if you can't see any behavior change, try to locate a *known good* sodimm and test with it.

Thanks a lot for the procedure advice. I have a X32 here, since it's my only `sodimm-equipped` machine I wonder if the modules are compatible with the T40.

(note aside: I just read that there are 2 separate memory bank locations, one on the bottom, and one underneath the keyboard)

Yes, RAM from X32 will work just fine in a T40.
