What are you reading right now/have read recently?

#1 Post by t140568 » Mon Feb 15, 2010 4:16 am

What are you reading? What have you read recently? - Good or bad.

So far this year I've read:
Tony Hillerman's "Shapeshifter" - Decent but very predictable
1/4 of the way through Jerome Corsi's "The Obama Nation" - Good so far
~50pgs into Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography - VERY interesting so far

Next up:
I'm very eager to start Christopher McDougall's "Born to Run" - Just got it in the mail Saturday!

Recenty finished
"Stalingrad: The Fateful Siege: 1942-1943" Antony Beevor / if you want to get the notion how terrible the war can be.
"Nothing to Be Frightened of" by Julian Barnes / funny and sad at the same time (as all good books)

In the pipeline
"Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions" by Dan Ariely / Good book about how irrational we in fact are. And it is funny too.

"The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins
"An atheist is just somebody who feels about Yahweh the way any decent Christian feels about Thor or Baal or the golden calf. As has been said before, we are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further."

Reading right now: Dale Liu - Cisco CCNA / CCENT Exam preparation kit.

Uhm. I guess shouldn't mention this. People might think I am a nerd. I did actually read a HP Lovecraft book not too long ago, and before that it was BMW M Models history and Corvette - 50th anniversary book. Maybe that helps.

Just finished Born to Run. It's an absolutely amazing read, especially if you're a runner or aren't and would like to be.

Going back to finish "Obama Nation".

Bought "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil."

Don't know too much about it. Know that it has the south as a backdrop and a movie was made a couple of years back. Sounds like an interesting read :)

I've read some of his books. I must say that I did enjoy them. :thumbs-UP:

A Fire Upon The Deep

Across Realtime (the following 3 books)
--The Peace War
--The Ungoverned
--Marooned In Realtime

I've especially enjoyed books by the following authors (in alphabetical order, with favorites in brackets).
Jean M Auel [the Valley of Horses, Mammoth Hunter]
David Ball [Empires of Sand]
Tom Clancy [The Sum of All Fears, Executive Orders]
James Clavell [Shogun, Tai-Pan, Gai-Jin]
Don Coldsmith [Walks in the Sun]
Daniel Defoe [Robinson Crusoe]
Nicolas Evans [The Horse Whisperer]
Ken Follett [The Pillars of the Earth, A Place Called Freedom]
Ruth Beebe Hill [HANTA YO (Clear the Way)]
Victor Hugo [Les Misérables]
John Keats [They Fought Alone]
Louis L'Amour [The Lonesome Gods, Comstock Lode, The Walking Drum]
Eric Van Lustbader [White Ninja]

Although I have read other books by the above authors, and indeed a number of books and authors not listed. The list above is my 'A' list.

Unfortunately, the great time gobbler, the internet, has pushed aside my book reading. :(

In the wake of Citizens United v Federal Election Commission and the pending Humanitarian Law Project and funeral picketing (Snyder v Phelps) cases I re-read;

Hugo Black and the Judicial Revolution, by Gerald T. Dunne
Speaking Freely: The Trials of the First Amendment by Floyd Abrams

And, as I do every Spring Training since it was published, The Historical Baseball Abstract by Bill James

Now this is going to sound very low on an intellectual scale compared with the tomes mentioned already, but while on holiday recently I read a wonderful book that my wife had finished. It was 'Gentlemen & Players' by Joanne Harris. I thoroughly recommend it.

BTW, Joanne Harris was the writer of 'Chocolat', a magnificent book that was turned into an entertaining but mediocre film.

I'm reading Man, Economy, and State by one of my favorite Libertarian-Anarchist philosophers - Murray Rothbard.
Samuel Adams wrote:The natural liberty of man is to be free from any superior power on Earth, and not to be under the will or legislative authority of man, but only to have the law of nature for his rule.

Of the books I listed above, "A Fire Upon the Deep", "The Walking Drum", and "The Pillars of the Earth" stand out. I was intrigued by the story of "Walks in the Sun".

Just finished "America For Sale" by Jerome Corsi. Completely worth the read.
Just started "Made to Stick" by Chip Heath and Dan Heath.

Was looking at "You are not a Gadget" by Jaron Lanier last night at Barnes&Noble. Looked interesting, but wasn't sure if it would be interesting enough for $26. Looked more like a $15 book. Anyone read it?

You are not a Gadget is from $12 to $16 at amazon..
reviews seem to indicate it is worth the investment..
AND, if you buy a real, paper and bound copy you can give it to your neghibor to read..
or resell it to a used book store..

OH!, i highly recommend Amazon Prime".. :)

I finished "Made to Stick" a few weeks ago and also finished "You Are Not a Gadget" on Friday. I was very wrong about You are not a Gadget. It, in fact, would have been worth the $26. Several times during the read it made me think of this forum. A very interesting look at people, technology, and the interaction between them.
