What are you reading right now/have read recently?
Re: What are you reading right now/have read recently?
Conspiracy of Fools - Kurt Eichenwald
Detailed account of the fall of Enron.
The most interesting thing about this story is that it has happened before in various forms, and will surely happen again. It is all some variation of the Ponzi scheme... greed snowballs out of control like a powerful drug.

Re: What are you reading right now/have read recently?
Just finished Cold Granite by Stuart MacBride (off the $5 table at the local newsagent)... I bought something cheap to read while travelling that I wouldn't feel bad about abandoning on my current travels. It turned out to be quite an engrossing read in the police/murder/thriller genre. Set in Aberdeen, Scotland and playing the local dour climate well into the story line.

Michael Lewis, "The Big Short". A very well written and researched book about the financial crisis. I read it in one day. The actual book.
I also like to listen to Audible books on an iPod.
I read "Conspiracy of Fools" when it came out (excellent), this is just a perfect, yet unfortunate, addition to books about colossal human failings.

Just finished: Vernor Vinge - A Fire Upon the Deep
Halfway through: Vernor Vinge - A Deepness in the Sky
Next: Dan Simmons - Ilium & Olympos
Regarding Vernor Vinge, he is good and very imaginative, a definitely good read - but when we talk about space opera, I have to say that I prefer Hamilton over Vinge. But that's just me.

Currently reading A Most Wanted Man by John le Carré (2008). I have been a bit disappointed in some of his more recent novels, but this one is VERY engrossing.

Re: What are you reading right now/have read recently?
I just finished Ilium/Dan Simmons and now I'm reading Olympos. Shakespeare and Homer and Proust, greek myth, space opera style. Fantastic read, even I know I missed several allusions and some of the meaning in the storyline because I'm not familiar with all the references this work relies on.

Finished Olympos/Dan Simmons for some time now (great but I liked Ilium a little more), now I'm reading Snow Crash/Neal Stephenson; CosaNostra Pizza, isn't that funny?

Re: What are you reading right now/have read recently?
Loved Cold Granite as well.
I'm currently reading (again) Jupiters Travels by Ted Simons - it's what inspired me to start travelling, and every time I read it I'm back in Africa on a motorbike (the future plan!!).
At work I listen to Talking books all the time - get them from the local library.
Other favourite authors are the likes of Jeffery Deaver, Dean Koontz, etc, etc (sorry can't remember any more!)
Reading is a real escape for me and in many ways the best time of the day is getting into bed and picking up the latest book until it falls over my face

A fascinating book and full of amazing adventures. How possible would the journey be today? I've been trying to remember when I first read it. Probably in the late 1970s. I also read the follow up.poshgeordie wrote: Jupiters Travels by Ted Simons - it's what inspired me to start travelling, and every time I read it I'm back in Africa on a motorbike (the future plan!!).

Re: What are you reading right now/have read recently?
For Christmas my wife bought me a NookColor from Barnes&Noble - AMAZING gadget, by the way.
Recently, my wife and I thought she might be pregnant (but isn't, yet), so I bought/read "Dude's Guide to Pregnancy" by Bill Lloyd and Scott Finch. Absolutely terrible. I was looking for something that could give good solid advice, but got a book that told me to spend those nine months in a mancave to avoid the whole 'catastrophe'. Does anyone have a book to recommend on this subject that provides practical advice to a clueless guy like me?
Also, I just picked up "Decision Points" by George W. Bush.

Dr. Spock's Baby and Childcare worked well for me and my wife, pretty good advices and explanations. Good luck with your.. quest, children are amazing.
It is not easy to grow up a child but it's rewarding.
Meanwhile I finished Snowcrash/Neal Stephenson (good book!), The Curse of Chalion and Paladin of Souls/Lois McMaster Bujold and now I'm reading The Hollowed Hunt, the last of the Lois McMaster Bujold's Chalion trilogy.
