What do I do with sick t42?

#1 Post by brucehe » Thu Feb 18, 2010 5:06 pm

Hello all,

I unfortunately had my t42 take a bad fall. It worked for a while but now is exhibiting GPU problems with locked up mouse and BSCOD but will boot up fine at a later time.

I recently replaced the display with a good used one as well as a new 160gb hard drive.

What do you suggest, parting it out, trying to replace the system board with a used one? Any thoughts.

thanks,

Bruce

Sorry to hear about your T42.

What's the 7-character model number, 237?-???

If your model is equipped with an 9600 gpu, sounds like the drop has shook lose the GPU. This can also sometimes happen by lifting it from a front corner with one hand. I have a T42 that suffered this GPU issue. I'm now using it for spare parts.

I agree with the general consensus here that it could likely be the a loose GPU, but and specially after a fall you should discard at least two things :

- Some other component just making bad contact (I'd dismount / reseat at least the RAM and miniPCI cards.

- RAM gone bad... try to work with one dimm at a time if you have 2 and / or swap them. Also memtest could be useful to determine RAM is OK.

If you don't want to spend a lot of time looking for a fix this may be worth considering:
