Installing Windows over Serial

#1 Post by ThinkPad560X » Sat Feb 20, 2010 12:01 am

I have a ThinkPad A30 and using my ThinkPad X41 with the UltraBase since I'm waiting for my A30's CD/RW/DVD-ROM Drive to come in. My X41 has a CD/RW/DVD Drive and wanting to install my test Beta version of Windows 7. I have the serial cable connected to the A30 from my X41. Serial is old now and don't even see it anymore on new desktops or laptops, but can Is there a way to install Windows over serial? LAN would be okay aswell. If not My Drive should be in soon.

Installation won't work.
Format the HD in 2 partitions. Then transfer W7 to the second partition.
You'll have gray hair by the time that W7 transfer is finished, should you use the serial port.
Why don't you copy it via the home network or a USB stick?

I'll just wait for my A30 CD/RW/DVD Drive to come in I guess. does the serial work like the IR on most ThinkPads?
I tryed transfer Windows XP on another model awail ago. and it took about an hour to reach 1%. But yeah its easier to just wait for the drive to come in. Most of my ThinkPads im trying to install Windows on are the 560X and 240 as there the hardest to install Windows on without a CD-ROM Drive. Right now I have my A30 pluged into the Dock with the PCMCIA Portable Drive bay 2000 hooked up to it, using the 570/600 series CD Drive on it. but not reading CD during setup.
