X41T Freezing problem, can't find cause.

#1 Post by control » Sat Feb 20, 2010 3:45 pm

I've had it for about eight months or so and it's just started to happen. It freezes completely, mouse doesn't move, no response, have to hold down the power button to reset. It does it in windows and linux. I first thought it was the harddrive dying, but I got a new one and it still does it. I tested the ram, but it didn't give me any errors. Then I noticed it freezes if I move it suddenly after its been lying still for a while. So I messed with the active protection system, turned it off, turned it back on, turned it to high, back to low and it still does it. It's not something I can replicate on demand either. I can pick it up and shake it around and it won't freeze. I even thought it might've been the battery for some strange reason, so I pop in the original, and then with no battery and then the extended again but it still does it. Running out of ideas here. Anyone have any suggestions, or is it time to retire this baby?

Try different stickof RAM. Did you test it with MEMTEST86?

Yeah tested it with memtest, i think i'll just pop it out and just run with onboard 512mb and see what happens.

Yep, still crashes with ram stick removed. Popped in a replacement keyboard just for the hell of it. We'll see how long it lasts before freezing.

Can you install NHC and monitor the CPU temperature?

Haven't had a chance to check yet, had to switch to the regular X41 for class. Will definitely check later though and thanks for the help.

If the CPU temp is running too high, you may need to reapply thermal grease under the fan/heatsink assembly.
