FlexView Yellowing - what to do?

#1 Post by netzspannung » Mon Feb 22, 2010 9:39 am

Hi guys.

My trusty t42 IPS SXGA+ laptop is currently being replaced by a new-to-me t60. Side-by-side, the old T42 Flexview display looks almost defective, it is dim and the whites have a distinctly yellow tint. I am keeping both machines, the t42 goes to my wife )) So,

Is it the backlight or the inverter? I have noticed minor backlight flickering after a cold start, 10-15 secs max. Are they both IBM proprietary or somewhat standard? Because I want to keep this machine, like, forever, you know....

Oh, by the way, the panel is from LG-Philips. And I did a search on the forum. I don't smoke and I hope it is not the polarizer film yellowing - that would be impossible to fix, right?

I'm afraid it's the aging of the screen, i.e. polarizer getting yellow.
There's a place in the USA that replaces those filters, but shipping from/to Russia makes the price prohibitive.
Replace the LCD with any 15" Flexview from a T4x, R5x, T6x or R6x.

My experience with LG-Philips SXGA+ Flexviews on multiple T42 and T60 units showed that older units always look dimmer and more yellow than new units. Whether it's the polarizer or the backlight - I don't know, but it's an unfortunate effect, especially considering the high overall quality of the panel.

With that said, the screen should still be bright and usable enough for years to come, and the differences are usually only noticeable in direct comparisons.

Well, sourcing a new panel is what I want to avoid, down here it seems they are made of 100% unobtainium :D

But even when yellow, the screen still has a very fine color rendition, paradoxically.

No alternative to IPS as of yet. My brother has a Viewsonic 23 inch 1920x1200 widescreen panel and I can attest that it is out of this world 8)
