x22 Wireless G driver installation problem
x22 Wireless G driver installation problem
Hi there, I just picked up a used x22 that comes with an ActionTec Wireless G mini PCI, when I "test drove" the box, the G works "kind of" fine, as it can connect to unsecure network, but not secure ones, this was on Win XP SP1. When I took it home, things still work the same way, so I decided to just reinstall a brand new copy of XP (SP2) on. After that, I cannot install the driver at all (downloaded from IBM, and it looks like it's ActionTec driver). Anybody has experience with this ?
BTW, does X22 has Ethernet/modem as well as the optional Wireless card, or it's either one or the other? Thanks for any help.

if it's wireless G, it's not the original card and that driver won't work, you'll have to figure out what kind of card it is and find the appropriate drivers. the original card in these is an actiontec with a prism2 chip (yay for linux compatibility), but it's B only and has a modem on the same card, so it's likely that you don't have a modem either. the ethernet is on a separate daughtercard, so with the wireless + modem mini-pci and the ethernet daughtercard you can have all three, and every one I've seen that has factory wireless has been this way.
if someone's been monkeying with the guts of that machine and you're having a hard time telling exactly what you do or don't have you might try dowloading a linux install cd off the web somewhere (the gentoo minimal one works nice since it's such a small download, or knoppix if you want to be able to get onto the web without going back into windows), booting it, and typing "lspci" -- you'll get a detailed list of exactly what you do have. the relavent lines in my case (X23 w/ factory wireless) being:
0000:02:08.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82801CAM (ICH3) PRO/100 VE (LOM) Ethernet Controller (rev 42)
0000:02:05.0 Network controller: Intersil Corporation Prism 2.5 Wavelan chipset (rev 01)
0000:00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corporation 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 02)
0000:02:08.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82801CAM (ICH3) PRO/100 VE (LOM) Ethernet Controller (rev 42)
0000:02:05.0 Network controller: Intersil Corporation Prism 2.5 Wavelan chipset (rev 01)
0000:00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corporation 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 02)
As you mentioned Enchain, if Stevech's unit has the WiFi antennae installed then it shipped from the factory with a CDC ethernet card.
Unless it's been removed it will show up in device manager.

James
