Which keyboards can I put on a T23? (Warning: one 54k image)

#1 Post by eyestrain » Tue Feb 23, 2010 4:02 pm

The search function ignores the word "keyboard"!

I'm considering taking my wonderful 770e keyboard and putting it on my T23 just purchased. The layout looks the same, except the T23 has 3 speaker volume/mute buttons in line with the power button. My 770 keyboard doesn't.

Would it work? Easy job to do? Are the volume buttons part of the keyboard?

Are there other models I can buy broken cheaply, with compatible keyboards? (Besides of course the T20,21,22, which are a little too expensive, even broken.)

This T23's keyboard is very good, but not as superb as my 770's, or as a T22 I recently used.

Similar if anyone knows which keyboards a T41 will take, other than T40-T43p.

Thanks

AFAIK that won't fit. Only KBs from the T2x series fit.
Most T2x KBs were made by NMB [in Thailand], but there are cheapo junk KBs about, that were made in China.
P/N 02K4951, FRU 02K4970 is such a bad example.
Looking at the back, it shows at least 2 holes for each key!
The Thai KBs have only few holes, and are much sturdier.

Thanks for the response.

Are there ways to tell which model keyboard I have, without opening up the notebook? Linux and or Windows.

Take the battery out. You should then see a small (aluminum) part of the keyboard on the right side of the small yellow CMOS battery.
If that shows only one small round hole on the left and a square hole in the right top corner, you have an good NMB keyboard.
But if you see a small round stud and a rectangular just above it, plus a small rectangular on the bottom at the right, then you have the crap Chinese keyboard.

Thanks.

Sounds like the NMB. Maybe just a different(?) NMB than the T22 I played with which was excellent, this one isn't nearly as good to my fingers, but is better than my T60's and T41 keyboards.

The ding makes me wonder if someone swapped it out, though the entire bottom is like new. Supposedly this sat in a mainframe room, though there is a bad spot on the screen, and not where the trackpoint is.

Yup, that's an NMB.
Maybe the laptop indeed just sat ther, without the KB (hardly) ever being used. May have dried out the rubber cups and caused the moving parts to become unflexible.
Try another KB if you can.

With use the KB has improved! :D

Strange thing, if I engage numlock, the number keys seem to act as arrow keys, for example the K/2 key moves the mouse arrow downwards.

I don't use numlock, don't care... just odd.
