Can't Install Win7 on T60P

#1 Post by ArtShapiro » Wed Feb 24, 2010 9:38 pm

I've just tried a "clean" install of both Professional 32 and Ultimate 32 on my XP-Pro equipped T60P.

Both have failed after copying from the installation CD to the disk, asserting that some file(s) are missing or corrupt. I didn't write down the exact message.

Clearly my hard drive was being accessed, so it wasn't a matter of the missing Sata drivers.

The now-clobbered drive is being restored from my Windows Home Server machine, so I should be back up on XP by the time I hit the transmit key on this message. But I'd sure like to know what I'm overlooking here.

Any advice would be more than welcome.

You might want to run some hard drive diagnostic software. You may have some bad blocks that need to be hidden.

Here are some links I have bookmarked.
Hitachi Drive Fitness Test

Fujitsu Diagnostic Tool and Erase Utility

Samsung HUTIL

SeaTools for DOS

PC Doctor for DOS bootable CD - ThinkPad

Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS (CD)

I found that there was a Fujitsu drive in there, which to my horror is only 5400RPM. (In a T60P??!).

Going to the Fujitsu site in your link, I found they had been sold to Toshiba a few months ago - that was news to me. But Toshiba had the Fuji tests available. The extended test ran a few minutes over an hour, and the drive Passed.

So I guess that isn't it.

Well, noticing that there were a few delays - several seconds at a crack - during the diagnostic run, I figured that just maybe it was doing a correction of some sort and not telling me about it.

I tried reinstalling yet again - Bingo! We're up on Windows 7.

Thanks for the suggestion; that was anything but a "gimme" to me.

I'm glad it somehow worked out. :)
