Thanks. I shall probably be purchasing that tonight. I'll update the thread when everything happens and it is working (if it is).

Thanks everyone for their help, AJ and Black especially. :D

You could maybe try a small 12V bulb from a car. The adapter voltage is 16V, the battery ~11V.
What do you mean try a bulb?

Nevermind, just tried it with an LED. Battery didn't light up, but charger did light the LED up. However it kind of sparked when I tried it a second time, but I suspect that of the LED being low power and I might have got POS+NEG screwed up...if that killed the charger that's my own dumbass fault anyways.

EDIT: Just tried with another LED and it lit too. Pulled the trigger on motherboard. We'll see!

I got the motherboard and it boots up and beeps 1-3-3-1, but there is no video. I'm going to let it sit and charge for a while and see what happens. The battery indicator is blinking amber colored, stays for a sec, turns to green, then back to blinking, and repeats.

Took battery out, it is not just blinking the amber color. Tried to turn it on again, blinks amber, holds for a sec, then goes back to blinking, repeats.

Have you installed the RAM before powering the board?

That's complete BS...ugh. I hate dealing with PayPal and this crap. I'm going to see if I have any sticks of ram and try those to make sure it isn't that, then messaging the seller.

Same thing.

Seller told me to try PC2700, had a stick laying around. Boots up, screen turns on, but nothing is displayed, and after a while the laptop makes 2 beeps then CPU fan turns off. When I press power button to turn off it beeps once (when I hold for a sec or two) then shuts down.

That board is bad...I don't know what additional proof you'd require after all that has been done with it...

All that has been done? I've booted it up, tested two sticks of ram of the same kind, then tested another one and it gave me a different result. You're giving me nothing here, just saying "oh the board is bad" without any proof or any telling me why or explaining whatsoever.

OK, let's look at the things from a different perspective:

The machine turns on, then beeps and shuts down. No video whatsoever at any point in the game.

If you know that the LCD is good, where does that leave us?

It's not overheating, since it's only running for a couple of seconds.

It's beeping the "bad board or RAM" code with the PC2100 installed.

It's not beeping the same code with PC2700, but is not doing much of anything either.

Let's grasp at a few straws here:

It's possible that the CPU is bad, although I wouldn't put any money on that card. You can try out the one from the old board.

Furthermore, you can unhook the LCD completely and test the machine with an external monitor to eliminate the possibility of something in that area shorting out.

And none of that gets the machine to boot properly and show video...you can be 1000% certain that it is...you guessed it: a bad board.

Good luck.

External screen.

0271: check date and time settings

1803: unauthorized daughter card is plugged in power off and remove the daughter card

I removed Bluetooth and Wireless and even the expansion slot thing...nothing.

Are you certain that your laptop LCD is good?

As for the errors, the first one would indicate a bad CMOS battery, or that the board has been sitting for a long time without one. Not a big deal.

The second one...you've completed all the steps required and are still getting an error...that does not sound appetizing...

What are the chances of you returning that board for a refund?

If memory serves right, an SXGA+ screen has some issues with an R51 board. Just passing by, so perhaps someone could verify if this is the case. If it is, then it would be another snag for him even if the replacement board is OK.

I think you hit the nail on the head!
I just reread the whole thread, and as it turns out, OP has a 14.1" SXGA+ LCD, which unfortunately will not work with an Intel GPU mobo of the T40/1/2 or R50/1 series. :banghead:

Well, I missed that VERY important detail, so shame on me...

Having said that, since it's bad advice on my end that led OP to purchasing an incompatible board, I'll give him the choice of free XGA LCD (which will work with that planar) or a free T40 motherboard.

PM me.

Hopefully I can get it straightened out..however...even if I hooked it up to an external monitor, is it just the battery that is bad then? OR does the screen being even plugged in cause errors?

You shouldn't be getting that error regardless of the screen...1803, that is...

Have you got anything in the PCMCIA slot(s)?
On an R51 board, if you move the PCMCIA cage from a T4x mobo onto the R51 mobo, only the top-slot will work, because natively R51 mobos only support 1 PCMCIA slot.

No, I'm not, and I even removed that, so that isn't the issue.

Try to enter the BIOS if possible, set the date and time, save and reboot. At least it should work to some point and maybe clear out the 1803 error as well.

When you get into the BIOS, also click on F9 to set all BIOS defaults, then hit F10 and exit.

Removed everything possible except HDD (I think), nothing. I set the date and time, set defaults, and then even set the thing to disagnostics. It runs through the RAM (first screen), then gets to IBM hard drive active protection sensor diagnostics start with a small rotating line then basically instantly errors 1803.

Also, the CPU heatsink gets hot very quickly...is that normal?

Well then... at least the motherboard is very suspicious again as it SHOULD NOT report such error at all if no unauthorized device is connected...

Another thing to try: update BIOS and ECP, the error might go away.
