Random internal clock resets on R40

#1 Post by seeker4 » Thu Jun 10, 2004 4:46 am

Hi,

I have an R40 about 6 months old. For some time now (few months), I will occasionally find that the internal clock, as is visible at the bottom right of any MS Windows OS, is incorrect. I am using WinXP. It seems that somehow the clock is spontaneously and intermittently resetting itself.

For what it's worth, the minutes seem to stay accurate -- only the hour is changed, and it ends up 12 or 15 hours behind, etc.

In the good old days, I would have suspected that the little coin-shaped internal battery, that maintained the CMOS, was dead or dying. However, I don't have a clue how technology has changed and whether that is even a valid possibility any longer.

Suggestions?

Its odd if only the hours change and not the minutes but my first guess would be to try replacing the backup battery you mention - for parts and instructions on how to do this download the hardware maintenance manual for your machine from :

http://hmm.tpdrivers.com

it may also be a good idea to get the latest bios and embedded controller for your machine from the driver matrix at:

Thanks for the good tips.

Embedded controller? That sounds like a piece of hardware. ??

First, check your time and date settings in Windows, and make sure that you are set to the correct time zone.

Next, if you are logging in to a domain, check with your system admin to see if you are being sync'd to a clock on the network.

Not a network connection (standalone laptop), so not a "sync" issue.

About the timezones. Now I'm curious. I did notice that my time zone was set to Pacific U.S. (not right for me). However, I don't recall ever setting it there.

More mysterious is this: Let's assume that the time zone has been goofed up for some time (set to Pacific accidentally). Even if that had been the case, then my clock would have been wrong all along and would not be changing sporadically. Right?

If you had not already, try reconnecting the CMOS battery. My T22 just started this a few weeks ago, then it would not boot and reported that it could not find the HD. I opened it up and unplugged and replugged the CMOS battery. Booted to the errors and reset the time. Rebooted and let Windows 2000 Pro come up. CHecked the clock and asll is well. It has been this way for a week now. Fine that is.

I am not sure if the connector was lose or what, but it is good now.
