T42P: Presentation Director Installation trouble
T42P: Presentation Director Installation trouble
Hi folks-
For some reason, Presentation Director (latest is 2.33) won't install on my system. I'm currently running 2.31.
If I click on the setup.exe file, I get the busy mouse icon for a moment, then nothing. If I use the IBM Software Installer, it hangs.
I have all the required components pre-installed, such as the hotkey manager and so forth.
Any ideas? I can try uninstalling v. 2.31 then doing a "fresh install" of 2.33, but I thought maybe there is another way.

I noticed that newest IBM Messenger (2.102) would not install properly. It didn't hang, but I did get an error. This was true on my T41 ThinkPad and true on my NetVista A30 desktop. I uninstalled the prior version and then the new messenger would install. I did not have the problem with Presentation Director, but my experience with Messenger supports your view to uninstall first. ... JD Hurst
OK guys, what's next?
I uninstalled Presentation Director 2.31, which completed successfully. Rebooted. Attempted installing PD 2.33, either using the Setup.exe installer, or using the Thinkpad Software Installer utility.
Both of them just sit there. In both cases, a Setup.exe process starts (2,188 K) then .... nothing. Setup seems to be hanging. It doesn't end. I've given it time (20 minutes).
Maybe I should have backed up before this... now I'm Presentation Directorless, and it's something I use.
Any thoughts?
Marc

OK, it's installed. What a pain, though.
First I booted to safe mode and tried an installation from there. It failed, but not before getting farther in the process than before. It even asked me what language to use. Then it died because other IBM components it relies on weren't loaded.
So I rebooted normally, and manually shut down most non essential tasks, leaving alone the IBM tasks. I got down to about 200 MB committed. Then I tried it again, and it worked.
My thought is that even though I "shut down" NA VirusScan, perhaps it was still blocking this installation somehow, even though it allowed about a dozen others to proceed normally. Killing the process manually might have been responsible for my eventual success.
Thanks for everyone's help.

Presentation Director installation trouble
I just had the same problem: IBM's Software Installer kept running forever while trying to install the Presentation Director, 2.33. My machine is an R40.
Like Marc_G, I already had 2.31. Before I saw this thread I'd already uninstalled it in hopes that this would help, but it didn't. After I read the thread, what I did was to disable my Norton Antivirus Auto-Protect and close down all other running programs, and try again. That still didn't work, but I rebooted, again disabled Antivirus and closed down everything else, and finally the Software Installer was able to install Presentation Director.
