T22 memory usage

#1 Post by Rex » Fri Feb 25, 2005 1:48 pm

Hi there,

I have an T22 running W98SE. It had 256mb of memory and I have just upgraded to 512mb.

I also run a small memory monitor utility that allows me to free memory. When I had the 256mb installed, following booting, I could free memory, leaving about 192mb available. So whatever was running was only using about 64mb.

With 512mb installed, following booting, I am left with about 380mb, available, the various processes are using about double what they previously were.

Am I doing something wrong? Am I missing something? I really don't understand.

I upgraded because I am about to start using Photoshop for some image editing and would like to have as much memory available as possible.

Greatly appreciate any advice.

Many thanks,

Rex

more "system stuff" is loading in memory instead of swapping in/out... this is a good thing that will result in increased performance...

Leon,

Many thanks for your reply. When I had 256mb. why would the same 'system stuff' not have been loaded?

The same things were loading before, but like Leon said, they now loading in memory (your physical RAM), instead of in the swap file (which is your hard drive, used as virtual RAM). reading/writing to physical RAM is many, many times faster than to the hard drive, that's why things operate faster with more memory.
