machine-type question (2373-A82)

#1 Post by mbelanger » Thu Mar 04, 2010 8:52 pm

First post...stumbled across the forum while looking for information on the -A82.

I tried sifting through a number of pages to learn more about the T42 I recently acquired. However, I find very little reference to the -A82 in the various parts guides. I did get the information that it was based on the -6UU, but again, I find little about THAT type.

The few links I found in the search that seemed like they might have been good sources of information were dead or were now redirecting to other more recent files.

Any insights or guidance would be appreciated. I'm just curious about what I do or don't have relative to some of the other machine-types that seem to have been discussed on the boards.

(As an aside, my primary reason for getting this unit was price and past experiences with older ThinkPad equipment during a former period of employment. I needed a new-to-me laptop that would handle basic word processing and web access for Lexis, etc. At less than $200 all-in, an older T42 seemed like it would fill the bill).

IBM ThinkPad T42 2373-A82

Original description: Based on 2373-6UU: PM 725 (1.6GHz), 512MB RAM, 40GB 5400rpm HDD, 14.1in 1024x768 LCD, 32MB ATi Radeon 7500, 24x-8x DVD, Wireless upgradeable(MPCI), Modem (CDC), 1Gb Ethernet (LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip, 6 cell Li-Ion battery, WinXP Home.

In other words, pretty low-end. :?

And in case you need to find out what the specs are for some other systems, use this:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... y=2373-A82

and simply change the TYPE number in the URL after "PathEntry=" to whatever you are looking up (or use the "Enter a Product number" box on that page).

P.S. Welcome to thinkpads.com!

Welcome to the forum!

Directly from horse's mouth:

Product: ThinkPad T42 2373-A82 [change]
Operating system: All [change]

Original description: Based on 2373-6UU: P M 725(1.6GHz), 512MB RAM, 40GB 5400rpm HDD, 14.1in 1024x768 LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 7500, 24x-8x DVD, Wireless upgradeable(MPCI), Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip, 6 cell Li-Ion battery, WinXP Home

This is a fairly basic, entry-level T42. Nothing wrong with that. If you treat it with care (never lift a T4x machine with one hand only) it should serve you very well for a few more years. Adding a little more RAM, bigger hard drive (if needed) and a wireless card would be advisable IMHO.

Hope this helps.

It has a wireless card that was put in somewhere along the line...it is nice not having to mess with the USB stub I used on another computer :D

Hard drive should be sufficient for what I need, but I do have RAM enroute to take it to the 2GB max.

I had seen the basic information but couldn't really find where the -A82 sat in the heirarchy of what could have been ordered back in June 2005 when it looks like this one was produced...not that it really matters now, since it is in my possession and paid for, but still stuff that I was curious about.

Let's say that it was a lower-end T42 at the time being. Once again, if the machine is in reasonably good shape and does what you need it to do, max out the RAM as you're intent and enjoy. In Windows XP and most Linux distros, T42 with these specs is more than fast enough for an average user. Gaming console it's not, but most people would never buy a ThinkPad for that reason anyway.

Good luck with your "new" toy and may it serve you well.
