Purchasing additional RAM for X201
Purchasing additional RAM for X201
All,
I just ordered my x201 and it's spec'd with 4GB of ram. However, I want to up the ram to 6GB being that I'll be running up to 2 VM's at any given time. The ram that the x201 comes with is PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM (2 DIMM).
The memory I'd like to purchase is a 4GB single DIMM of ram but the speed is 1066Mhz versus 1067Mhz which is installed in the x201. Would I face any issues if the speed of the new DIMM I purchase is 1066Mhz rather than 1067Mhz?
Thanks in advance for your insight.........

Re: Purchasing additional RAM for X201
hi cgm....
not sure which of the X201 models you have got....
but in GENERAL , the new machines with "iseries' intel proc = have the new BIOS
These models will gererally....'adjsut' their internals speeds"up&down" as necessary.....to get best speeds for the combinations of i5+ memory+buss+ etc
I dont have nor have any chance to play with these models(iseres) but we have several Tseries loaded with Kingston HyperX 1333mhtz memory; and they are super fast , reliable , and NO ADDED HEAT nor loss of battery power!
Here is a link where I got them from(even better since u in CA!)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... n%20HyperX
and best thing about buying from here = if they dont work OR if u dint like them; you can RETURN THEM....
Hope it helps

Re: Purchasing additional RAM for X201
I did a quick google of pc8500 1067mhz and pulled up:
http://www.buy.com/prod/lenovo-2gb-ddr3 ... 47919.html
Just in case make sure the ram in your laptop is ECC or not. I don't know why it would be since that is reserved for servers, but just to make sure.
In the end that 1mhz diff is just a marketing ploy most likely to trick you. The ram runs at PC8500 standard which is 1066, but rounding can give 1067. Check out the wiki or better yet go to crucial.com and use the memory selector. Match those specs and your good.

Cheapest 4 GB SODIMM for X201 is about $170 on newegg.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... 9&name=4GB
You can get 2x 4 GB SODIMM a bit cheaper on ebay if you want both modules and you might be able to get single 4 GB modules on ebay.

I saw that on new egg. Do you think G-Skill is reliable? I also saw a brand on Ebay called Super Talent.dfumento wrote:Cheapest 4 GB SODIMM for X201 is about $170 on newegg.

This goes for about $139. I searched for reviews and it seems they're an oem supplier. What do you think?
Re: Purchasing additional RAM for X201
The actual speed is 1066.6666666... and both 1067 and 1066 are just rounded off numbers. It doesn't matter.

Re: Purchasing additional RAM for X201
cgm.....
some suggestions/advise...
a) you spent enough money to get a X201 = nice machine; now dont skimp on QUALITY MEMORY!!
b) to get best 'bang for the buck' = spend little extra and get a PAIR of matching SODIMMS.
c) in my view , 'newegg' do stock most RELIABLE _NAME and QUALITY stuff; and they will work with if you have issues - Returns and repalcements is the most important things I look for in any supplier! > i dont usally endorse any supplier (nor against eBay sellers) .....newegg have never let me down in my 10+ yrs of dealing with them - never even had to call their Cust Serv even! Most things I did on line and never have had any shortcomings!
d)NewEgg gurantee BRAND NEW factory-unused items that they SELL - as oftem memory and things like that = often 'sales cycled' from one customer to next ,,,,,
blah blah >way to much info !!!

Re: Purchasing additional RAM for X201
I have an x201s on order with 4GB memory. I have a 4GB PC3 8500 stick - would it be bad to add this stick to the x201s, as the modules would not be matching?
Thanks.
Thanks.

in Short Answer = YES ...............but it depends on 'how much is the MISMATCH"
Generally of they the same like " PC3-XXXX - DDR3 series " but one is "13333" and other is "10600" within the DDR3 range , than the LOWEST SPEED is what the laptop will 'generally' work at!
However , I wouldnt recommend (dont!) put DDR2 with DD3 , it will cause problems and possibly damage your laptop....
Hope this help !
