Welcome IBMman!

Now if we had user avatars you could certainly do a creative edit on a picture of the man of steel and drop in an "IBM" where the "S" normally is and it'd be perfectly legit  !

But welcome to the forum, and it'll be nice having a real IBM person that we can chat with once in a while! You'll find this place to be the friendliest user forum in existence, and certainly one of the most helpful. Gawd... you might even call it a sort of "family" affair.

Welcome.

Yeah, avatars would be great. Nonny, is there a chance you will get broadband in the near future?

I have had a cable modem at home for over 2 years. However when I am away from home and not at work, I access this forum using my cell phone as the modem for either my notebook or my PDA. I haven't been at home a lot in the last few months.

Now answer this for me - what is the benefit of avatars in a discussion forum?

Welcome to the forums IBMman. Sounds like you've gotten yourself an excellent job and transfer.

Bratislava is one of the most beautifiul cities on the Danube! The women aren't hard to look at either.

None. I'm opposed to them. The screen is already busy enough for my tastes. Adding a bunch of avatars, animated or not, is gilding the lily.

Avatars are not that bad...

#14 Post by DrGrafix » Fri Jun 11, 2004 3:12 pm

Speaking as a graphics-oriented person  I think avatars aren't that bad provided there are reasonable boundaries with regard to size and complexity. I'm not really nuts about animated ones though. I've seen forums where folks are using avatars that were just about the same size or larger than that nice looking lady that was walking away from us a few days ago! Way too big and complex... and in that case... distracting.

I think many forums on the net allow them because it gives users a chance to make a visual representative statement that might have some interesting underlying characteristics. They can be esoteric, cynical, whimsical, or whatever. What I never liked was when a forum gave you a choice of 40-50 stock avatars. With compression techniques and a strict size limit, the bandwidth required for a 1/2" X 1/2" or say a 64 pixel X 64 pixel 256-color avatar shouldn't be all that bad.

James... are you an IT guy? They tend to frown on frivolous use of bandwidth.

I think with the group around here, we get those characteristics without any need for visual cues.

(Plus, I too hate animated avatars and excess graphics as they just create distractions and slow loading times; and I have a T1 connection and DSL connection.. but page loading can always be quicker.)

No Mike, I'm a devotee' of the written (and spoken) word!

I find that the depth of character, or lack thereof, of most of the inhabitants of our little piece of the WWW is more readily discerned from the words they use in their messages than some animated avatar that best represents them in their eyes!

Of course, there's always folks around like Ian, whose personal portion of the universe appears to normally be somewhere outside the orbit of Pluto! How would one get his errrr....., ummmm...., UNIQUE personality across with an Avatar?

(No, a picture of a UNO wouldn't do it!)

I think Ian would use a Golf's picture (without the driver window) as his avatar. But who knows, he might be still in love with Unos. BTW I haven't heard about his Golf recently? I hope the window has been fixed.

He was hoping to get it fixed by the "Home Team" while he was in the UK this week.
