T60 HDD Bay Adaptor

#1 Post by gcrames » Mon Mar 08, 2010 2:41 pm

This may seem a stupid question - but with regards part no 40Y8725 - the Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adaptor.

The manual says that it only supports Thinkpad drives - but will it actually accept any 2.5" HDD? or are there any I should avoid due to physical size etc?

Any help much appreciated.

A third party hard drive will require a caddy, it will flop around in the adapter otherwise. See the newmodeus advert at the top of the page.

The serial ATA hard drive adaptor that I bought (in the UK) for my T60 did not come with a caddy. It is I assume, part number 40Y8725. Sorry I really should have checked, however, if you look at the hard drives for sale via the Lenovo site, you'll see that each comes in a caddy and hence (I believe) the adaptor does not come with one, and hence the assertion that it only works with Thinkpad drives.

That newmodus link is to the one that I bought. I was very impressed with the speed of dispatch and delivery.

Yes -- but not at that price!!! (And you do not need the rubber rails.) All of these are the same thing, and they cost just one tenth the price.

Edit: Fixed typo.

In the given eBay link, you need to modify the find/search term into:
(IBM, Thinkp, Leno*) cadd* -(T2*,t4*,hardrive)
You want only T6* stuff.

Generally true, but not in this case. For what gcrames wants to do, i.e., eliminate the "slop" in the Hard Drive Bay Adaptor, the T4x caddies are functionally identical to the T6x caddies.

Many, many thanks for everyone's help on this, I've now got the caddy (via ebay, thanks for the tip EOMtp) and the adapter (found on amazon uk).

Can I install a SATAII drive in my T60?
Cause the adapter is for sata1, but sata2 drives in high volumes)

If the connector type is the same, yes, BUT, it will only run at SATA I speeds due to a motherboard chipset limitation.
